I’m a home pro – popular garden features that can decrease a house value by £50k & it’s bad news it you have fake grass
MANY people get inspired to spruce up their gardens and add in features which make them more attractive or fun for entertaining guests.
However, a home expert has issued a warning over the top features that can actually decrease your property by as much as £50,000.
A study by Power Sheds has revealed the least wanted outdoor features that could actually put people off.
The most-hated garden feature was found to be artificial grass, so it’s bad news if you’ve spent hours laying faux turf outside this year.
Experts even report this could decrease a home’s value by almost £15,000.
They may be fun for kids, but built-in, sunken trampolines were the second biggest pet peeve, and would put 55 per cent of buyers off.
The third unwanted feature may be harder to control, with sloping gardens being a turn-off for 49 per cent of people.
You may wish to put a bit of TLC into your outdoor space, with “dull decor” reducing value for 43 per cent of buyers.
The final items on the list may seem rather bougie, but they don’t appeal to every person.
Despite the luxury they can provide, swimming pools and outdoor saunas were found to put off two in five Brits (39 per cent).
In today’s market, swimming pools could actually decrease a home’s value by £57,000, according to Blenkin & Co estate agents.
Meanwhile, hot tubs and outdoor gyms would put 38 per cent of people off putting an offer into a house.
Finally outdoor kitchens would reduce value for 35 per cent of those surveyed.

The study also looked at the most desirable garden features that can add money to your home’s value.
When it came to the UK’s dream garden, a shed was revealed to be the most desired feature, with almost three quarters (70 per cent) revealing they want to see this.
Property experts have said that adding a shed can add 10 per cent to the house value.
According to the latest ONS data, the average UK house costs £286,000, meaning a new summer house or shed could bring the value of your home up by an average of £28,600.
Features such as paving and trees can add up to 20 per cent to a property’s value by providing a designated garden area with a purpose, generating shade and encouraging wildlife.
Attractive features such as a pond or water feature are also worthwhile, as they can add £2,000 in value.
Property expert Martin McCreath, from Your Move Estate Agents, explained how important it is to make your garden the best it can be when looking to sell.
He said: “Gardens are very high on a buyers’ list of priorities, with their presentation, size and position often considered very important when making the final decision to buy.
“It is so important you make it look as good as possible and catch a homebuyer’s attention quickly.”
