I’m an interior designer – the common mistakes people always make and why you have to think function over style
AN INTERIOR design whizz has revealed the big mistake that many people make when they move house.
So if you have plans to move home any time soon, or have recently relocated, you will need to pay attention.
Decorating and design whizz Julia Sousa explained that when people move home, they often decorate how they think their home should look, rather than choosing styles that suit their habits.
Posting on social media, the interior expert said: “Pro tip: live in the space a couple of days first, then decorate FOR your habits.”
She then explained: “This is a mistake I see all too often – people decorating against their habits.”
Julia then shared a snap of a woman’s hallway, as she noted: “She probably decorated and then realised what her habits were, which explains the baskets, the shoes pulled at the bottom.
“How many times is she putting all this stuff away? Let’s clean it up.”
Julia then shared her suggestions, as she continued: “I’d start by adding closed and open storage – somewhere to have dog toys and somewhere to easily put away shoes – because if you put closed cabinets for shoes, forget about it.
“The mirror was a great idea, however, it is a little too small for the space.
“Make it more functional by going with something bigger. It’ll brighten up the area and make it appear larger.
“Lastly, you really wanna keep the core to a minimum in an entryway.
“It is an on the go area, so add a bowl to catch things like keys and wallet.
“You could also use command strips and put a little hook inside the doors of the cabinets for the dog leash as well.”
Julia’s TikTok clip, which was shared under the username @the_avantgarde, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as at the time of writing it was posted 18 hours before, but had quickly amassed 490,400 views.
Social media users were thankful for the advice and many took to the comments to express this.
One person said: “So helpful.”
Another added: “I love this!”
A third commented: “Needed this.”
Whilst someone else penned: “Wooo, I love this series.”
