But 15 laps into the race the inevitable happened as Verstappen passed the Ferrari and never looked back.
Sergio Perez, 33, overtook Sainz with five laps remaining to make it a Red Bull one-two.
And Sainz, 29, rounded out the podium places ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc.
But Lewis Hamilton, 38, endured a frustrating afternoon as he finished sixth and bemoaned Mercedes’ strategy towards the end of the race.
Speaking on the team radio, he said: “Now we’re screwed because I don’t know how these tyres are going to last.”
The seven-time world champion, 38, was handed a five-second penalty but that did not hamper his finishing position.
Meanwhile, Verstappen’s win sees him move beyond Sebastian Vettel as the driver with the most consecutive Grand Prix victories.
