Emmerdale legend breaks down in tears on This Morning and has to be comforted by Holly Willoughby
EMMERDALE star Matthew Wolfenden broke down in tears on This Morning today as he reflected on leaving the ITV soap.
Matthew has portrayed shopkeeper David Metcalfe for 18 years and was treated to a montage of his best bits on the daytime show.
The nostalgic clips left the star feeling emotional and This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Craig Doyle handed Matthew, 43, a box of tissues.
He told them: “I’m so nervous about leaving, two decades.
“It feels like the right time, the door is left open. They’re not klling me off.
“I’m allowed to tell you that, I might be back, but we’ll see.”
Matthew continued: “I’m still really emotional, sorry.
“I met my wife on the show, had kids, it’s been a big part of my life, 18 years.”
In 2007, he began dating co-star Charley Webb, 35, who played Debbie Dingle.
They got engaged on Christmas Day 2009 and welcomed son Buster in 2010.
Their second son, Bowie Grey, was born in 2015.
The couple wed at Ripley Castle, North Yorks, in 2018, and third son, Ace, was born in July 2019.
Matthew’s stand-out soap moments included David wearing ex-fiancée Leyla Harding’s wedding dress to The Woolpack, and the shopkeeper’s devastating cancer diagnosis.
Speaking about the storyline, the actor said: “The clip there where I’m totally bald, we did a testicular cancer storyline where David lost all his hair.
“I spent six months shaving my eyebrows and shaving everything to do that storyline, the pople I met through it people who survived cancer were amazing.
“I do feel as an actor I did it justice and as an actor that makes you proud.”
While most known for Emmerdale, he has also taken part in Hollyoaks spin-off, Let Loose, and had a one-off part in drama The Courtroom.
