I’m a celeb stylist – the clothes that are secretly giving you cellulite & what to wear instead
CELLULITE is something most women have.
But what if we told you that what you’re wearing might be making your cellulite worse?
While body con dresses, skinny jeans, SKIMS and shapewear may iron out your lumps and bumps on the outside – experts say they could be making it worse underneath.
Between 80 per cent and 90 per cent of all women who’ve gone through puberty have cellulite, according to Cleveland Clinic.
Genetics, sex, age, the amount of fat on your body and your skin’s thickness determine how much cellulite you have and how visible it is.
Cellulite appears when fat is pushed against the connective tissue beneath your skin, making the surface of your skin look lumpy and appear dimpled.
It often appears on naturally fatty areas such as your thighs, stomach and buttocks.
Studies have suggested that cellulite is linked to water retention in the body, and wearing tight clothing that can reduce circulation in the legs can lead to an increased risk of cellulite.
TV Celebrity Stylist Lalla Bronshtein says: “Over the years tight fitted style clothing has been one of the top fashion trends – but it’s a trend that could be causing cellulite.
“While compression-style apparel such as leggings help us suck it all in, some tight fitting clothing can have the reverse effect if they cut off circulation – and it can lead to the appearance of cellulite.
“To prevent causing cellulite, I would wear more flowing and loose garments, clothing that’s not so tightly fitted to your figure.
“You should also switch to more natural fabrics like cotton and linen over synthetic and polyester fabrics.”
Here, Lalla reveals to YASMIN HARISHA what clothes are the worst culprits for when it comes to causing cellulite.
LEGGINGS
Lalla says: “Low-rise leggings which have a mid-level compression will give your curves an ultra-smoothed out look, but be wary of what’s happening underneath.
“Leggings will pull you in but due to their tight slick fit, they may cause more cellulite underneath due to their restriction.”
LONG SLEEVE BODYCON DRESSES
Lalla says: “Long sleeve bodycon dresses embrace all of your curves and shape – but they aren’t great for circulation.
“Because the dress covers the whole body, and with it being a full bodycon cut there’s more chance of cellulite over every body part.”
SKINNY JEANS
Lalla says: “High waisted skinny jeans which promise to lift, shape and contour your body are great, but that’s not so natural for the body.
“With jeans being made from a denim fabric teamed with a very skinny fit, this combination is likely to cause more cellulite.”
OVER THE KNEE HIGH SOCKS
Lalla says: “Thigh high socks look great on, but in order to keep them staying up they will need to have a certain amount of elasticity in them.
“This means your blood flow can be cut which means more chance of cellulite.”
15 DENIER TIGHTS
Lalla says: “Usually worn under skirts and dresses, 15 Denier tights are usually a great cover up for cellulite.
“But due to their elasticity which helps to give shape to the legs, the fabric is not great for those wanting to avoid having cellulite.”
ACTIVEWEAR LEGGINGS
Lalla says: “Most fitness leggings will have a bodycon fit.
“But with leggings like these being worn during exercise, it means there will be lots of blood pumping around the system that won’t be able to get through as smoothly – and this can result in more cellulite to the leg.”
CATSUITS
Lalla says: “A catsuit will suck you in from head to toe.
“But with this being a very tight fitted catsuit and covering the overall body, there is a high chance of cellulite being caused.”
What to wear instead…
STRAIGHT LEG JEANS
Lalla says: “Straight leg jeans are the same width at the bottom of the leg, as well as the top of it.
“It means you can still look stylish with what appears to be a fitted jean, but is loose around the skin which will allow your body to breath.
“They are the perfect alternative to skinny jeans.”
OVERSIZED SHIRT
Lalla says: “Oversized shirts are extremely comfortable to wear as they have a loose fit.
“They can be dressed up or down, or made to be a bold fashion statement – and most importantly don’t restrict any blood blow.”
LOOSE JUMPSUIT
Lalla says: “Loose fitted jumpsuits allow for plenty of movement, which means pure comfort and no restriction.
“It’s the all in one outfit, which means zero effort when getting ready but you’ll look super stylish at the same time.”
