I’m a interior designer – save £5k transforming children’s rooms by using savvy tricks & it won’t break the bank
IT’S natural for parents to want to create a space that’s as individual as their child.
However, embracing every passing trend or adjusting to their growing tastes can quickly escalate costs.
The average parent will spend over £5,000 decorating their child’s room and will update this four times on average during their childhood.
Getting it right from the get-go allows you to make small adjustments over the years, helping you to save money in the long run.
Here, the Design Director and Founder of Anne Haimes Interiors shares her top tips for designing a child’s room for the greatest longevity without sacrificing style…
Stick to the basics
Often, we see nurseries and children’s rooms lean heavily on a theme or motif. But doing so will only ensure a costly redecoration a few years down the line.
Although perhaps controversial for children’s bedrooms, choosing a neutral colour scheme for walls, furniture pieces and window treatments will give parents the most bang for their buck.
Neutral tones like whites, greys, and beiges provide a timeless backdrop that can be easily adapted to changing styles and preferences.
But remember, children’s rooms should still exude fun and creativity. So, just because you’ve selected a neutral background doesn’t mean you should neglect pops of colour or patterned items.
Use versatile decor elements like throw pillows, rugs, and removable decals to add pops of colour and style to the room. These can be easily swapped out or updated as your child’s preferences change.
Alternatively, a simple painted mural can give children’s rooms a strong focal point without the commitment. Simply paint over the mural once the style is outgrown.
Invest in storage
Smart storage design not only keeps clutter at bay but also contributes to a visually pleasing and harmonious room.
By seamlessly integrating storage options, you create clean lines and unobstructed surfaces that allow the room’s design elements to shine.
Investing in storage also opens up opportunities for creative design expression. Storage units can be chosen to complement the room’s overall theme or style, serving as functional pieces of decor themselves.
Whether it’s incorporating charming baskets, stylish shelving, or sleek cabinets, each storage solution can add a layer of visual interest, contributing to the room’s overall aesthetic appeal.
Plan for the future
Your little one might be a while off starting school yet but planning ahead for when they’re (almost) fully grown will save you a headache down the line.
Consider where to add a workstation which can be used both as a teenager and as a child for arts and crafts.
Instilling the importance of a dedicated workspace early on prepares children for future academic and professional endeavours, as well as helps establish a clear boundary between work and play.
Go for classic furniture styles
Although it might seem like a big initial cost, opting for well-made furniture that can withstand the test of time will reduce the need for frequent replacements and save you money overall.
High-quality furniture pieces not only resist wear and tear but also often come with warranties or guarantees, providing added assurance of their longevity.
Select classic furniture pieces that have a timeless appeal and won’t go out of style even as your child grows.
You can even look for vintage or thrifted items. Old-fashioned toys, décor and furniture can add a sense of character and charm to a room, often for a fraction of the cost.
Maximise functionality
Above all else, children’s bedrooms should always be practical. And designing a room that can grow with your child while remaining fully functional is key.
Consider extendable tables or desks that can accommodate various activities and adapt to your child’s changing needs.
You should also look at furniture pieces that serve multiple purposes. Trundle beds can be a great addition when hosting sleepovers. Alternatively, beds with built-in storage solutions can help keep your home clutter-free.
