Sex Education

Going back to school has never been more enjoyable – because we get to hang out with the Sex Education gang once again. Otis, Eric, Maeve, Aimee, Adam and co are returning for a fourth and – tragically – final series of the hit comedy-drama. Wipe away your tears, though, because this season promises to be the best yet, with the friends moving on from Moordale High and embracing an exciting, if daunting, new future.
Student sex therapist Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) are starting at Cavendish Sixth Form College, while Maeve (Emma Mackey) is studying in the States, being taught by famous author Thomas Molloy (Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy). Adam (Connor Swindells) is working as an apprentice at a local farm and Aimee (Aimee-Lou Wood) is throwing herself into art. As for Otis’ mum Jean (Gillian Anderson), she’s as unpredictable as ever, trying her hand at hosting a radio show about sex and relationships. It promises to be another hilarious and heartfelt eight-episode season.
Spy Kids: Armageddon

Twelve long years after the last Spy Kids movie, the franchise explodes back on to our screens with a new cast and a new adventure but with creator and director Robert Rodriguez still at the helm. When Patty (Everly Carganilla) and Tony (Connor Esterson) are ordinary kids with extraordinary parents – the world’s top secret agents, Nora (Gina Rodriguez) and Terrence (Zachary Levi). But when the kids accidentally help a dastardly game developer release a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they’re forced to become spies themselves in order to save their parents, and the world. Cue another kick-ass kids’ action adventure that’ll keep youngsters on the edge of the sofa.

Colourful baseball promoter and entrepreneur Mike Veeck is notorious in the USA. The son of legendary baseball franchise owner and innovator Bill Veeck, Mike made his name working for his dad in the Chicago White Sox’s marketing department. However, his career came to an abrupt halt in 1979, when he devised the infamous Disco Demolition Night, a promotion designed to draw crowds to the White Sox. The idea was to explode a crate filled with disco records on the field of play, but unfortunately the stunt resulted in a riot. Shunned from the sport for years, Veeck eventually returned in the 90s helping to boost independent baseball and devising countless pioneering ways to attract more fans to the game. Including interviews with the man himself, plus dramatic reconstructions featuring Charlie Day as Mike, this documentary tells his incredible story, a story of triumph, tragedy and redemption.

The darker, more threatening sides of social media, racism and the horrors of mob mentality are explored in this nail-biting new thriller. After Harri (Sex Education’s Chaneil Kular) journeys from the city to dog sit at his parents’ home in the countryside, he’s mistaken for a suspect in a catastrophic London train bombing. Before long, vigilantes, intent on dishing out violent justice, have tracked him down to the house. Can Harri find a way to prove his innocence, while keeping the murderous mob – stirred up by social media – from breaking in?

The Continental: From The World Of John Wick

When the first John Wick movie dropped back in 2014, even though it starred the godlike Keanu Reeves, surely few would have predicted that the film would spawn three sequels, a spin-off show (Ballerina, due next year) and this thrilling-looking three-part prequel. Set in seedy, dangerous 1970s New York, The Continental turns the spotlight on Winston Scott, the character played by Ian McShane in the movies. In this incarnation, we meet the young Winston (Colin Woodell) and learn how he rose to become the boss of the New York branch of The Continental hotel. Also starring Mel Gibson as the grizzled 1970s proprietor of The Continental, Cormac, it’s atmospheric, glamorous and – this being the world of John Wick – very violent.

Thanks to unprecedented access with the four women themselves – whose enduring bond is a pleasure to behold – it’s a surprising and intimate portrait of how their stars rose both on and off the catwalk, but also reveals some heartbreaking events taking place behind closed doors.

Illustrator Lisa (Antonia Thomas) and journalist Danny (Craig Roberts) are insomniacs. They’ve tried every known medication and weird and wonderful remedy known to man, with very little success. The only things that help to keep them sane(ish) are the late-night phone calls they regularly share while the rest of the world are fast asleep. Chatting for hours on end, the friends discuss their individual daily struggles, from relationship struggles and avoiding annoying neighbours, to getting one up on bitchy fellow school parents. Although the laughs don’t exactly come thick and fast, and the show tends to try too hard to be zany, there’s a good chemistry between the leads, a strong supporting cast (Samantha Spiro, Blake Harrison and Rich Fulcher) and it’s certainly an intriguing set up.

No One Will Save You

A film’s title doesn’t always give you a good idea of what to expect. But something called No One Will Save You is unlikely to be a whimsical, light-hearted romcom, is it? And that’s certainly the case here. Kaitlyn Dever – who wowed in dramas Unbelievable and Dopesick, not to mention Booksmart – stars in this tense psychological sci-fi thriller as Brynn, a smart but anxious young woman who lives a lonely life in the house where she grew up. Events take a sinister and scary turn one night when she’s woken by the sound of terrifying extraterrestrial intruders. Can she find a way to defeat them, and her anxieties?

Fans of the first season of Minx – the irreverent, racy and hugely entertaining comedy about young 1970s feminist Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond), who teams up with low-rent publisher Doug (Jake Johnson) to produce the world’s first erotic magazine for women – were gutted when the show was cancelled by HBO last December. Fortunately, the show swiftly found a new home and here comes the second season, which promises more saucy, sassy laughs and drama. Having sold publishing company Bottom Dollar to a shipping magnate, which leads to Minx becoming a commercial success, Joyce and Doug are both left struggling – him with his place in the world and her with her newfound stardom.

Gael Garcia Bernal stars in this feelgood biopic about legendary gay wrestler Saul Armendariz, who found fame in 1980s Mexico as an exotico – a male wrestler who fights in drag. Revealing the bigotry and barriers Saul faced throughout the early stages of his career, as well as his remarkable rise to stardom, his romantic relationships and close bond with his mother Yocasta (Perla De La Rosa), it’s heartwarming and funny, and features an extraordinary performance from Bernal. Whether you like wrestling or not, this film is likely to deliver a real smackdown.

Love Is Blind

A new season of Love Is Blind already? Yes, a mere five months after the last series concluded, the fifth season of the addictive dating show is here, ready to pair up more singletons willing to put their love lives on the line for our entertainment. As before, 15 men and women will spend time talking to each other in the show’s now-legendary pods, trying to work out if they have a connection. If they do, either can pop the question – and if their date accepts, they’ll get to meet in person and discover everything there is to know about their potential life partner. They’ll also plan their upcoming wedding – but when it comes to the crunch, will they say “I do”? Join hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey to find out.

If you’ve never watched Mad Men before, well, where have you been for the last 16 years? Widely acclaimed as one of the best series ever, this beautifully-acted and supremely stylish show transports viewers to Manhattan in the 1960s, introducing us to the men and women working at successful advertising agency Sterling Cooper. Chief among them is gifted and charismatic Don Draper (Jon Hamm), a complicated, secretive man with a genius for winning ad campaigns and a line in very smart suits. With a cast that also features Elizabeth Moss, January Jones, John Slattery and, later, Jared Harris, and a brilliant knack of deftly weaving historical events into the storylines, it’s genuinely fantastic. All seven series come to the free-to-use UKTV Play this week, giving anyone who missed it first time round the chance to find out what the fuss was about. We’re sold.
