I make £60K per year but was WAY better off on minimum wage – what I’ve had to do to ensure I can still go out
A WOMAN who earns around £60K per year has claimed she was better off when she was on minimum wage.
Social media user Sam said that the cost-of-living crisis had become so out of hand this year that she’s had to make big sacrifices to make her money go further.
Sam, aka TikTok user @sam.breezie, lives in Canada and said she couldn’t believe the difference ten years had made in what people, including herself, can now afford.
She explained: “The cost of living in 2023 is so bad that I’m pretty sure I actually was better off financially when I was making minimum wage in 2012 – versus me almost making $100,000 (£60k) today.
“In 2012, I lived with my roommate in a two-bedroom apartment and our rent was $700 (£420), so we paid $350 (£212) each.”
Sam then listed her other outgoings and their price points over a decade ago, as she said: “I paid maybe $100-$150 (£60 – £90) for groceries.
“Our utilities were maybe $100 (£60) a month for everything, and my take home pay making minimum wage was probably $1300-1400 (£790 – £850) a month.”
So Sam said that even once she’d paid her dues, she still had plenty to play with or do what she pleased with.
She recalled: “After all my expenses and necessities I had so much money left over – several hundred dollars left over.
“I was able to go out to eat multiple times per week. I mean, nothing fancy, but I was still able to go out.
“I was able to go shopping and I really liked buying make-up and clothes and I was able to do that.”
But fast forward to ten years later and Sam said that despite her salary going up substantially, she – and so many others – are finding it much harder to afford the lifestyle they had previously.
In fact, eating out and shopping out are now rare occurrences, it seemed, as Sam had had to make some life choices to help make ends meet.
In the video posted to her social media profile, she continued: “Now in 2023 I pay $3,300 (£2k) dollars a month for rent in British Columbia, split in two so I pay $1650 (£1k) of that.
I really feel like I had a lot more disposable income in 2012 when I was making minimum wage

“Utilities are at least $200 or $300 (£120 – £180) a month.
“I have a student loan payment of several hundred dollars a month.
“I had to move outside the city, so now I have to have a car.
“Gas prices are ridiculous, car insurance – it adds up.”
Sam continued: “Obviously I am making a decent salary, I can afford it.
“But I really feel like I had a lot more disposable income in 2012 when I was making minimum wage.”
