I rescue broken down motors for a living – 10 easy checks drivers MUST make before their MOT… it’ll save £1,000s
A MOTORS expert shared the top ten easy checks all drivers must make before their MOT as it’ll save them thousands of pounds.
Ben, an RAC worker, took to YouTube to share his advice that could help you save money on your vehicle.
The motor expert begins the video by running his palm over the windscreen with a gloved hand as he tells viewers to check their windscreens for cracks.
He then takes the windscreen wipers and examines them to ensure they are in good condition.
Next, he says it is essential to make sure all the lights and indicators on the vehicle are working – while asking someone to confirm they are working properly from the outside too.
The tread depth of the tyres also need to be checked – and this can be done using a 20p coin if a driver does not have a tyre tread gauge.
“If the outer band isn’t visible, they’re above the legal minimum of 1.6mm,” says Ben, while pushing a 20p coin into the tyres ring.
He also urges viewers to check the tyre pressure too when examining the wheels before an MOT.
The next check is carried out under the bonnet as Ben advises drivers to top up all fluid levels including screen wash, coolant and oil.
“Check that the horn works, give it a quick honk,” he added.
The expert then steps into the vehicle to make sure all of the mirrors are intact and secure.
“If you see any warning lights on the dashboard check them at a garage before your MOT,” he said.
The final crucial check is to give your number plate a good scrub.
“It needs to be readable to pass,” Ben explains.
After all these steps have been completed, the RAC deems your vehicle “all set” for its MOT.
This handy advice comes after another MOT mechanic who has fixed thousands of cars revealed the name of a popular family car that is by far the cheapest to service.
One more mechanic revealed three quick checks drivers can make to stop their car failing its MOT.
Brakes, tyres, and lights are the most crucial checking points before an MOT, according to experts at Macklin Motors.
And a final expert mechanic revealed the most common MOT scams that could be costing you thousands of pounds.
Former mechanic Steve Larsson told the John O’Groat Journal: “It’s important to be aware of rogue mechanics who may try to take advantage of customers by exaggerating the severity of problems and recommending unnecessary repairs.
“It’s always a good idea to get a second opinion if you’re unsure about a repair, and to choose a reputable mechanic or garage with a good reputation and industry certifications.
