Tower Bridge gets stuck open for the SECOND time in just days – causing traffic chaos and leaving drivers stranded
TOWER Bridge was stuck open for the SECOND time in just days causing traffic chaos and leaving drivers stranded.
The landmark crossing had opened to allow SB Adieu pass underneath on the River Thames at around 1.15pm on Thursday.
But the combined bascule and suspension bridge struggled to close for more than 45 minutes after this.
Traffic was diverted away from the area and drivers, cyclists and pedestrians were urged to find alternative routes.
The issue was blamed on a “mechanical failure” at around 12.30pm.
A City Bridge Foundation spokesperson said: “At around 12.30pm today, Tower Bridge became stuck in the raised position following a bridge lift.
“The bridge has now been lowered again and is open to road traffic as normal.
“We have taken the decision to cancel remaining lifts today while we investigate the problem, to ensure the road can remain open to motorists and pedestrians.
“Owners of vessels which were scheduled to pass through the bridge today have been notified. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
BBC Radio London Travel put out a warning to drivers on its X channel saying: “Tower Bridge stuck open.”
The bridge is now open as usual and traffic is moving freely.
Barge Adieu is one of seven Thames barges built between 1925 and 1930 for F W Horlock, Mistley.
