Greg Rutherford admits having an ‘advantage’ on Dancing on Ice – as he reveals he’s already lost 11lbs in training
THE latest Dancing on Ice signing has admitted he has an “advantage” as an Olympian.
Greg Rutherford won the gold medal for Team GB on Super Saturday at the London 2012 Olympics.
Now he’s taking on a new challenge, by learning how to dance on skates.
Following a long a break in his usual training as a long jumper, Greg says he’s lost 11lbs in six weeks after getting back into it.
He’s set to start rehearsals for Dancing on Ice next week.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain where he announced the news, host Ed Balls asked Greg if he was “going for gold”.
“Well, yeah,” he replied.
“I’m in no way expecting to be any good at this, but I’ll work as hard as I can.
“I tidied up my diet and I’ve gone back into training. That’s the thing for me… This is where maybe I have a slight advantage when I come into these sort of things.
“I remember how to train hard. Mentally it’s very easy for me to flick back into that so I work incredibly hard and crack on.
“I’ve already been trying to drop the weight and get the strength back.”
Greg is the 5th star to be confirmed for Dancing On Ice 2024.
The Sun last week revealed the 36-year-old would join the star-studded line-up alongside boxing legend Ricky Hatton, Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney, S Club 7 singer Hannah Spearritt and Love Island winner Amber Davies.
As well as being a sportsman, Greg also has dance experience from his time on Strictly Come Dancing in 2016, in which he danced with pro dancer Natalie Lowe.
He now hopes to do something that’s “never been done before” on the ice.
The dad of three famously joined the cast of Strictly Come Dancing back in 2016,
Greg told his former Strictly co-star Ed Balls on GMB: “I think this is going to be a really different experience and one that’s going to be quite exciting.
“I like a challenge and I’ve realised over the last couple of years I haven’t been training as much. I needed a reason to go out and do something again.
“What I really want to do on the show is perform something that’s never been done before.
“I’m not going to be the best dancer in the world, but I’m relatively strong still.
“Whoever I’m partnered with I want to throw them higher than they’ve ever been thrown or do a trick that’s never been done before. That’s my aim.
“I’ll go 100,000% on this. I’ll try hard, I’m in no way expecting to be good but I will work as hard as I can.”
