I’m looking to sell my characterless new-build – we’re banned from painting the front door and the estate is like Roblox
A MUM-OF-ONE has warned people about the biggest downside of living in a new-build home.
Sophie purchased the house with her partner back in 2018 and was chuffed to get on the property ladder.
But she has since formed the opinion that new-build estates are “characterless”.
Through her TikTok account, @oldtonewhome, she has urged fellow buyers to consider wider options before sticking a hefty deposit down on a “Roblox” home.
“Every house on our huge estate looks exactly like ours,” Sophie penned over a video.
“With the same layout, flooring, kitchen, etc.
“It’s characterless.”
What’s more, she is even banned from painting the outdoor window panes or doors to a unique colour to help her home stand out.
“Even though we own the property, in our contract it stipulates that we are unable to change the render, exterior doors or garage,” Sophie wrote in the comments.
In another video, she asserted the reasons that she would never buy a new-build property again.
“You’re buying at a premium,” Sophie warned.
“So, like getting a brand new car, you’re losing value as soon as you drive off the forecourt.
“That’s similar to buying a new house.
“You probably won’t make as much money as an older property when you come to sell on.”
Sophie continued that there isn’t much scope to make the property your own, or add value to it through decorating.
Another disadvantage is the lack of garden space due to developers trying to cram as many homes into their projects as possible.
She cited the fact that nobody has ever lived in your home before as a big pro to buying a new-build.
“This isn’t to scare anyone away from buying a new-build but just some points to consider,” Sophie clarified.
“I absolutely loved the fact that it was built for us and no one has ever lived here but us.
“But these are some of the reasons that we probably wouldn’t buy a new-build house again.”
Someone in her comments section remarked that the houses on Sophie’s estate “look like they’re made of Roblox,” prompting a laugh from the content creator.
She tried to sell the property last year but put plans to do so on hold when she welcomed her first child.
