This Morning legend Chris Steele makes rare TV appearance as he celebrates 35 years on screen
THIS Morning legend Chris Steele made a rare appearance on screen to celebrate 35 years working on the show.
The beloved GP, 78, has been a trusted figure on the programme for decades, offering his expert medical advice.
Chris first joined This Morning 35 years ago when Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan presented the ITV series.
Over the years the doctor has highlighted important health topics on national television, including breast and testicular cancers as well as potentially life-saving vaccines.
For a special segment marking his major milestone, Dr Zoe Williams sat down with Chris too look back at his contributions.
He revealed he first joined This Morning after becoming Richard and Judy’s family doctor.
Chris said: “It’s a long time ago, it feels like a long time ago and it is a long time you know.
“When I went on the show, I actually said ‘Look, I’ll do this for about three months’ because I was a family GP, you know, full time.”
In 1989 Chris held the first live breast examination, making history in British television
A decade later in 1999 Chris made history again by carrying out the first testicular examination on telly.
Speaking about that ground-breaking moment, Dr Steele said: “That was a taboo subject…
“‘No way are we having a guy naked from the waist down on morning television’ and the programme just contacted an agency, a male model said ‘Yeah, I’ll do it. No problem at all’.
“That was a very interesting progression forwards and showing testicles, and how to examine your testicles, seeing it being done is better than reading a leaflet.”
Chris also bravely allowed the cameras film his own journey after being diagnosed with skin cancer in 1996.
His treatment was documented for the show, as he explained: “Just to let the viewers see exactly what it entails, what the skin cancer looked like but also, they’re watching it and seeing the results afterwards and the very good result that I did get.”
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1 and ITVX.
