I live off-grid with my children – we grow all our food and store it in a DIY fridge, we even have power after storms
A SUSTAINABILITY enthusiast has given his followers a glimpse into his eco-friendly lifestyle.
The TikToker, who lives off the grid with his family, showed his audience the unique features of the home.
In his video, the eco-efficient expert (@ecosufficiency) explained: “So I live off-grid with kids and I’ve got a 10-year-old, an eight-year-old, and a seven-year-old.”
He revealed that his children attend the local school four days a week and lead normal lives.
However, as a result of their limited electricity, especially in the winter, the family has to go without several regular amenities.
“Living this way, we don’t have a freezer so that means no ice cream,” he explained.
The father of three also looked ahead to what future problems his kids may encounter.
“We don’t have loads of electricity in the winter so if they all want say a PlayStation when they’re teenagers, that might become a bit of an issue,” he told viewers.
The homestead is powered by wind turbines, which sometimes have an overload of electricity during stormy weather.
They also make use of a water turbine to increase their electricity supply.
Despite their limited electricity, the family still grows and stores their own food.
In another video, the father of three showed his audience how to make a DIY fridge.
He explained: “We’re off-grid here and we don’t have electric-powered fridges, we have these pots within a pot system.
“We’ve got five big ones of these outside the back of our house.”
The environmentalist continued: “I’ve bought myself three terracotta things, a big pot, a smaller pot, and a lid.”
For his first step, he placed a small layer of compost in the base of the large pot.
He explained that any water-absorbent material works when lining the pot.
Next, the homeowner placed the small pot inside the larger one and filled the space in between with more compost.
Once compact, he watered the soil, revealing that the liquid evaporates out and subsequently cools the inside of the pot.
“Not quite as powerful as an electric fridge but enough to drop the temperature by five to 10 degrees anyway,” he concluded.
He added the terracotta saucer to the top of the DIY fridge to maintain the cooler temperature.
One TikTok user was inspired to try out their own electricity-free fridge.
“I put one of these together, it works pretty well,” the impressed viewer said.
