The genius way to get the ‘damp smell’ out of wet clothes & shoes – all you need is a product from the 18th century
THERE’S nothing worse than having to deal with the damp, mouldy smell of wet football boots.
But one mum has shared the hack she swears by to get wet clothes and shoes smelling fresh again – and all she uses is a product from the 18th century.
Kaye took to TikTok to respond to someone asking how she could keep her boyfriend’s wet football boots from stinking out the house.
“A little hack to keep your football boots smelling fresh,” she said.
“You can also do this on any other footwear. There’s nothing worse than damp, wet smelling shoes, or anything damp to be quite honest, it’s awful.
“So I’ve done this since Louis played rugby. All you need to do is get your shoes and some bicarb.”
Of the old school product, Kaye added: “I am telling you, bicarb is life.
“Bicarb is a natural deodoriser – it doesn’t smell of anything but it lifts smells out of practically anything – soft furnishings, rugs, carpets, you name it.”
She added that it’s perfect for a situation such as cleaning up spilt milk, as it “drags all the smell” of it out.
As for how she uses it on the football boots, Kaye explained: “All you need to do when they come in is layer it in, pop it in.
“Shake it about so it gets everywhere – all along the sole, wherever you can get it.
“I don’t use this sparingly… I will stick as much as I can get in so it’s all layered. I will try and get it up the sides.
“If they have like the material sections at the front which I hate, even throw some on there.
“And you’re literally going to leave these to marinate overnight – sit them on top of a bin liner.
“Once they have done the work overnight and all the smell’s been lifted, I just literally get the hoover and hoover them out.”
“But yeah, it’s the best hack ever and it literally lifts any smell,” Kaye concluded.
People were quick to comment on the hack, with one writing: “Well known through the ages, does a good job on anything!”
“Off to do this now & if it works you are a GODDESS as I have 3 boys & their boots reek,” another added.
“My hallway stank of his boots last night no smell now when I’ve just come back from the gym,” Kaye replied.
“I do this with the kids school shoes during half term. Then I put it down the drain after too, no waste,” a third commented.
“That’s a good idea,” Kaye responded.
“Gotta try this my boys football foots stink and fed up of buying new ones cos of the smell that I can’t get rid of,” someone else wrote.
