I’m an interior designer – your OTT Halloween decorations look tacky, do fall decor in a classy way with my tips
WHILE many of us might be tempted to fill our homes with spooky themed décor, an interior designer said it’s important you don’t overdo it.
She shared her tips for classy decorating for Halloween.
While interior designer Julie Sousa (@the_avantgarde) loves a well curated home, she said some people take it too far on the holidays.
To guide her followers in the right direction and steer them away from tacky Halloween décor, she offered tips on what not to do.
“How do you decorate for fall without it looking like this or this?” she began in the clip, showing photos of cheesy home displays of pumpkins and fall word art.
She’s got you covered.
“Incorporate fabrics, colors, and patterns that remind you of fall.”
Her suggestions were heavyweight fabrics, knitted textiles, plaid, and warm earthy tones.
You can easily do so by swapping out pillows or blankets during this time of year.
Her second piece of advice was to ditch those classic signs that say phrases like “cozy” and “sweater weather” and instead just bring in those things that the signs boast.
“Focus on conveying the feeling that fall brings.
“Just incorporate elements that actually are cozy.”
She did so by filling her space with candles and blankets.
And lastly, she said over the top Halloween accessories are not the best.
“If you are someone who likes to get thematic, just remember that less is more,” she said, adding two small neutral-toned pumpkins to her bookshelf.
Julie left her followers with some parting advice, turning her main lights off so that only candlelight filled the space: “Don’t forget to set the mood.”
Viewers were appreciative of her guidance.
“Thank you! I want to do fall but make it subtle and not Hobby Lobby,” one person wrote.
“I love the simplicity. I absolutely hate signs but I like to add pumpkins. I can’t resist lol,” added another.
