I’ve lived a cushy suburban life but am now off-grid – I’ve got some complaints, I can’t clean the way I’d like to
A NEW off-grid homeowner has shared her thoughts after her first week in her new life.
The TikToker explained that she had recently given up her cushy suburban home to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
In her video, the environmental enthusiast, who goes by Fruits and Roots (@fruitsandrootsnz), explained: “I survived my first week off-grid and it’s really rainy but that’s fine.”
She joked: “It was not without difficulty. I might have complained a bit, clearly, I’ve enjoyed the cushy suburban life far too long.”
The sustainability fan recounted the busy week she had keeping up with her chores and household tasks.
She told her followers: “I actually got a lot of things done, especially sweeping, I got a lot of sweeping done because I can’t vacuum every day.”
She clarified that the house’s electricity was limited as a result of the constant rain due to their reliance on solar power.
Despite this, she also managed to get several loads of laundry done during the gloomy weather.
“I did washing and everybody got clean clothes because we want to be clean off-gridders we don’t want to be stinky off-gridders,” she joked.
She also shared the off-grid household task she constantly found herself doing throughout the day.
“I’ve got to fill this up six billion times a day because everybody needs clean drinking water, that is important,” she said, showing viewers a large water filtering container.
After filtering some of the water from her outdoor hose, she used the remainder to tackle her dirty dishes.
She explained why this particular chore was her least favorite of the week.
“I had to boil a lot of pots of water to do the dishes, which isn’t my favorite because I had to do them outside and it’s been raining for days,” she said.
However, she took a positive outlook on the task, claiming it was building character.
“I’m getting tougher, I’m getting stronger, I’m getting harder,” she told her audience.
After completing all her chores, she treated herself to a cup of catnip tea from her garden.
TikTok users took to the comments section to share their thoughts on off-grid living.
“I keep a five-liter kettle on the fire any time it’s going to rain and have a five-liter thermos that keeps it hot enough for dishes for about 15 hours,” recommended one viewer.
Another follower said: “We have a tube solar water heater to heat water if the weather is too bad. We have a pot on the fireplace and a gas califont.”
“Hah love this lol, I’m getting ready to go off-grid too,” commented a third person.
