How do I comfort my devastated friend who’s in mourning?

DEAR DEIDRE: I’ve just found out that an old work colleague’s son has taken his own life. I’m not sure how to help her.

She doesn’t live far from me. We worked together in a sewing factory for five years until it closed down.

She’s 52 and I’m 57. We always got along so well. I sometimes see her at the bingo.

I read in the paper about her son who was 33 and had depression. I don’t know what happened but I do know it must have been so awful for her and her family.

She has a daughter and grandchildren. I think her son had a child but I don’t know for sure.

I feel so sad for them and just want to help. What’s the best thing for me to do?

DEIDRE SAYS: If you know where she lives, leaving a card and some flowers on the doorstep will show that you’re thinking of her.

In a week or two, you could knock on the door again, perhaps with more flowers or something delicious you’ve cooked.

People often don’t want to be bothered cooking when they’re grieving.

It will give you something to talk about, let her know you are there for support, and that you could re-establish your friendship.
