10 items in your wardrobe that look mega cheap without you knowing and why light wash jeans are an instant big no-no
TRENDS come and go, and keeping up with them all can be pretty expensive.
But even some items you might think are timeless could be making you look cheap, at least according to fashion whizz Shea Whitney.
She revealed what you should ditch from your wardrobe and steer clear of next time you go shopping.
Big buttons
You might not notice the size of buttons on your clothes, but according to the fashion whizz they can instantly make your outfit look cheap.
“It was this weird clown-like appearance to me, I just think it cheapens the sweater, the cardigan or really anything,” she explained.
Instead, she suggested looking for pieces with smaller buttons that blend in with the fabric for a less jarring look.
Cheap online buys
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is – as least when it comes to clothes.
Shea used a jumper she bought from Amazon as an example of why you should avoid bargain buys from online retailer.
Despite being a size small, the jumper was too wide for Shea, and the quality was shockingly bad.
Pull-on jeans
Sure, they might be comfortable and convenient but the truth is pull-on jeans and trousers can make your outfit look really lazy.
Shea said: “It’s almost like a pull-on diaper, there’s no zippers, there’s no pockets, there’s no buttons. I just really don’t like it.”
So, what should you wear instead?
Invest in a comfortable pair of jeans with all the trimmings – they’ll look loads better.
Contrast stitching jeans
Maybe white stitching or seams looked good on blue and black jeans at one point, but that day is long gone, the fashion whizz joked.
Rather than looking unique and stylish, this trend can come across as cheap, like the brand couldn’t be bothered to match the colour to the fabric.
She said: “It’s just the cheaper route to take.”
Light wash jeans
Although not all light wash jeans fall into this category, many of them have a strange yellow cast on them which looks incredibly cheap, according to Shea.
“They’re just cheap jeans, and they’re trying to be light wash and they have this yellow cast to them, it just screams cheap to me, because it is.”
If you love the look of lighter jeans, it’s worth spending a bit more to get the true blue colour, she added.
Long skinny jeans
Of course, you want your jeans to fit you properly, but if your jeans are too long they can bunch up around the ankle, which can look really cheap.
You could go to a tailor to hem them so avoid this problem, but let’s face it who has the time?
Shea suggested opting for jeans with the option to buy short, regular or long so you can get the right length and avoid bunching.
Orange faux leather
The problem here isn’t necessarily with faux leather, Shea explained, but it’s with a specific colour of faux leather.
According to the fashion fan, camel coloured leather can look very orange when it’s fake, a dead giveaway that it’s cheap.
“Some brands that are kind of cheap, they will try to make a camel purse or camel handbag and it will just look orange,” she said.
Shiny faux leather
If you’re going the faux leather route, Shea suggested avoiding overly shiny styles as well.
Unless you’re going for something patent, the fake shine can come across as tacky, but don’t worry, there’s plenty of faux leather out there that looks real too.
Exposed zippers
Having zips on your clothes is pretty unavoidable, but when they’re exposed it can ruin your outfit.
“It’s very cheap to me when you can just see the zipper in the back, or just see the zipper along the side.
“Really good dresses or good styles will hide the zipper, it elevates the whole piece,” she explained.
Short slips in long dresses
This is something Shea said she sees everywhere, and it can ruin a perfectly good dress.
Oftentimes, long dresses will come with a slip sewn in because the fabric is more on the sheer side.
But when the slip is shorter than the dress and you can see it through the fabric it’s a big no-no.
“Why does it stop halfway down? It’s cheap looking,” she slammed.
