Family release heartbreaking photo of horror injuries suffered by granddad who was set alight outside mosque
THE family of a granddad set alight outside a mosque have released a heartbreaking photo of his horror injuries.
Mohammed Rayaz was doused in petrol by Mohammed Abbkr as he walked home from his local mosque.
The paranoid schizophrenic, who was this week found guilty of two counts of attempted murder, then set the 70-year-old on fire.
Mohammed’s family have now shared an image of the granddad in hospital that was taken just 24 hours after the horror attack.
He can be seen lying on a pillow with his severe burns unable to even open his eyes.
His son, Mohammed Ayaz, told Birmingham Live how his dad asked “Why did he attack me? I didn’t know or do anything to him” when he was finally able to speak again.
Mohammed had to spend four weeks in hospital to get his bandages changed, with medics warning it will take two years for his skin to fully heal.
He has also been left with PTSD and depression following the attack in Birmingham in March this year.
His son said: “He’s not the same as he was mentally and physically. We hope that time will heal and that the attacker gets a long time in prison.
“As a family, it has affected three generations – from grandfather, father to grandchildren.
“We are grateful to the jury and the public for their support and well-wishers. But this will stay with us all of our lives.”
On March 20, Abbkr stalked Mohammed as he walked home from sunset prayers at his local mosque.
He then covered the worshipper in petrol and set him ablaze.
The horror came just one month after Abbkr also lit 82-year-old Hashi Odowa on fire as he left the West London Islamic Centre in Ealing.
The Sudan national will be sentenced on November 17.
