I worked in Tesco and here’s what no one ever tells you – forget about a social life for starters
THERE is nothing wrong with an honest day’s work, but some jobs are definitely more enjoyable than others.
In fact, one influencer has dished the dirt on one of the UK’s biggest supermarkets and revealed what life is really like behind the tills.
Though she is mostly known for her incredible make-up skills, influencer Eleanor Ashton has been going viral for more than just her glitter eyeshadow.
In fact, the TikToker has gained over 339,000 views for her video about her time working for Tesco leaving shoppers captivated by her candid admissions.
If you are wondering what was at the top of her list of complaints, the make up guru revealed that she was frustrated by the lack of flexible hours.
Though you’d think this would only be an issue with traditional office jobs, she alleged that she needed to be available any day of the week.
“You are basically required to be open every day of the week and be very flexible with your hours,” she stated, adding: “You can’t choose what days you work.”
“If you don’t want to work weekends, don’t go for a job in a supermarket…You get what you are given,” : she pointedly told her followers.
Having bid goodbye to her social life, Eleanor also claims that she wasn’t able to enjoy traditional bank holidays – even over the festive period.
According to the former employee, Tesco will only close for two days out of the year: Christmas Day and Easter Sunday.
If that weren’t enough to put you off life behind the tills, she explained that her job still had all the downsides of a standard office job too.
Like many workers, Eleanor says she was expected to put in a fair bit of extra time.
“You are so frowned upon if you go home at the actual time you are due to go home,” she said, adding that various departments might need her to stay later at short notice.
Busy periods were also a regular occurrence, with the social media star describing working over the holidays as ‘hellish’.
“If you enjoy having time off around Christmas, if doesn’t exist in a supermarket,” she argued, revealling that the majority of big supermarkets had similarly intense workloads over Xmas.
“Obviously, every other super market is exactly the same,” Eleanor complained in the short video.
Since leaving the supermarket, she’s made a viral TikTok series about her experiences.
Though the now travel agent might be not be going back to the tills any time soon, other Tesco employees gushed about their time working for the brand.
A commenter even wrote: “I really enjoyed working for Tesco. I actually loved being on different departments all the time – I never got bored.”
Another Tesco worker agree, adding: “It’s really not that bad. Been working for Tesco for 6.5yrs. My old store I worked 4 days during the week, not past 7, not a weekend.”
Some employees were even shocked by the influencer’s admission, with a third commenting: “I think all of this depends on your manager because I’ve never had any of these happen to me and I’ve worked there for nearly a year in total…”
The beauty guru even agree with this and revealed that her experience had largely been positive until her boss changed.
“I didn’t until my 5/6th year working there. I loved it up until my last two years,” she recalled.
Fabulous have contacted Tesco and are still awaiting an official comment.
