Beauty fanatics mortified after spotting a Y2K hair trend making a comeback – people say it’s giving major ‘zebra’ vibes
NOUGHT again – a once-loved hair trend seems to be making a comeback and people are not happy, saying it looks like a zebra print.
The early 2000s were indeed something – we experimented with a number of rather questionable trends, including disc belts, kitten heels and denim overload.
But whilst some of these have, thankfully, remained a thing of the past, other horrific ghosts seem to be returning to 2023/2024 – such as poncho and the so-called popcorn top.
Now, as if we weren’t mortified enough already, beauty fans have revealed there’s a Y2K-inspired hair trend hitting the salons again – the chunky highlights.
The rather bold look, once made popular thanks to celebs such as Lindsay Lohan, Kelly Clarkson and the Olsen sisters, was all the rage between the late 90s and early 2000s.
After a few years of a more natural look with baby highlights and balayage, it appears style fans are now embracing the skunk look once again.
And whilst some are going totally wild experimenting with bright colours, others have stayed loyal to the true OG style – the black and white stripey duo.
One of those specialising in the trend is the hair and beauty pro @maitesoria2, from Miami, the USA.
The hairdresser, who’s won close to 157k fans with her makeovers, regularly shares her favourite work on TikTok – most of which is, you guessed… chunky highlights.
In one such video, the Florida-based expert proudly revealed just how talented she was with black and platinum blonde stripes weaved through her locks.
However, whilst the two may have been all chuffed with the transformation, the trend returning to our fashion runways and magazines was not welcome amongst people online.
One cried out: ”I’m not excited to see the chunky highlights back!”

Others even reckoned it was giving major ”zebra” vibes and compared her to Cruella de Vil from the animated classic The Hundred and One Dalmatians.
”Is that for real?” another couldn’t believe their eyes.
”It was fashionable 18 years ago,” someone else reckoned the trend was totally outdated.
”help, it’s horrible. She has a pedestrian crossing on her head,” a social media user chuckled.
Speaking of all things beauty, one thrifty woman has revealed how she adds a glow to her face with a 7p mask – and it’s even better than Botox.
Aimee Guess, from California, the USA, recently announced she’s made the decision to embrace her bare skin and no longer hides behind foundation and concealer.
Rather than using make-up bag essentials, the thrifty mum swears by a homemade mask, which calls for just some honey mixed with turmeric.
”The turmeric mask helps decrease the appearance of age spots and it’s very easy to do,” she explained on Instagram.
As well as tackling darker spots, turmeric helps healing skin wounds, reduces blemishes, moisturises dry skin and can even protects against environmental damage.
The budget-friendly facial needs to work its magic on your face for five to ten minutes and you can then rinse it off with warm water.
To achieve the maximum results, Aimee said she applied the 7p mask on her face once to twice every week.
”I stopped wearing face makeup to conceal my skin and I’m embracing the all natural look.
”I was shy about it at first, but I’ve learned that it’s a beautiful experience.”
Aimee went on to add: ”In doing this I learned about DIY face masks using kitchen ingredients and I am loving it!”
