‘You’ll never have to buy a new mattress again’ cleaning guru shares a 7p hack to remove dirt from your mattress
A SAVVY cleaning whizz has revealed how to tackle grim dust and dirt on your mattress with almost no effort – and the homemade remedy costs just pennies to make.
According to the guru, only known as @easy.tips39 on TikTok, the hack is so effective you won’t need to fork out for a new mattress ever again.
The easy remedy, the pro demonstrated in a video shared on the platform, calls for a few cupboard essentials most likely already sitting in your kitchen.
These include a tablespoon of salt, 150ml of warm water, a tablespoon of your favourite washing-up liquid, two tablespoons of white alcohol vinegar, as well as a tablespoon of baking soda.
All of these, Easy Tips showed in the clip, are combined in a bowl and you should see the baking soda creating bubbles when mixed with the acidic vinegar – this is totally normal.
Once the white foam has settled, take a spare plastic bottle and transfer the homemade mixture – a funnel should make the process easier.
Another pro tip, the whizz added, was piercing a small hole in the plastic cap to ensure you can pour the solution in smaller doses.
Spread the budget-friendly cleaning solution all over your mattress which has been covered with some regular kitchen salt and then proceed to work it in using a cloth.
”You don’t need to dampen it too much – just a thin layer will do.
”As you can see, the mattress doesn’t appear dirty -but when I wipe it with this cloth, folks, it will remove all that dirt we can’t see.
”So often you sit on your mattress and you start sneezing, coughing or having allergies […] and you don’t know why,” the pro noted, adding it’s the result of the dirty bed.
”Whether you like it or not, you’re breathing this in daily, so it’s very important to clean your mattress at least once a month.”
However, according to experts, there’s another mistake we all make – and it will only attract gross dust mites more.
The gurus at MattressNextDay warned that by making your bed as soon as you wake up creates the perfect environment for the teeny critters to thrive, as you trap in heat.
The mattress specialists explained: “Dust mites love the warmth of your bed, so in the morning, you should pull back your bed covers for 30 minutes and leave them to air and cool down, before you make your bed.”
The tiny creatures, which are naked to the human eye, feed on flakes of skin which we shed throughout the day – and while we sleep.
Commonly found in furniture, carpets, bedding and even stuffed toys, dust mites can cause itchy skin, a runny nose or watery eyes if you’re allergic.
They love places which are humid and between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America noting: “In a warm, humid house, dust mites can survive all year.”
They added: ”There are things you can do to keep your bedding as fresh – such as not eating in bed, not allowing pets on your bed, and using skincare and body products at least 30 minutes before bed, so your skin absorbs them as opposed to your bedding.”
What about wearing undies in bed? Well, according to the pros, it’s totally okay.
“It’s safe to wear underwear to bed,” they confirmed.
But you should take extra steps if keeping your knickers on sleep, they noted.
“However, the NHS recommends that you wash your underwear at 60 degrees to prevent germs from spreading.
“Used pants can contain microbes which can cause urinary tract infections, thrush and more.
“You don’t want those kinds of microbes hanging around your beautiful bedding, do you?”
