Our house looks like a standard 1960s pad but we started renovating it – secret rooms weren’t the only thing we found
A COUPLE has revealed the hidden secrets they found in their 1960s home when they began to renovate it.
Nicole Halliday shared her and her partner’s discoveries via a video posted to her Tiktok channel @nicolehxoo
“Things we’ve discovered since getting the keys to our 1960s home”, she said.
Nicole revealed that when the couple demolished the “monstrosity” of a wardrobe, they revealed a secret door, that not even the estate agents had known about.
Behind the door was a large room, meaning that the couple now have loads of extra storage space, or even room to add another bedroom.
The couple explained that the previous owners had been suffering from dementia, so had perhaps forgotten about the secret room.
The hidden room wasn’t even house’s only secret.
Underneath a cupboard, the pair found a hidden wine cellar.
Stacked high in the cellar, was bottles and bottles of wine, dating back to 1984.
Wine doesn’t have an expiry date, and if stored properly, the best wines can last for up to 100 years.
This means that the couple could celebrate moving into the property by opening up the 40 year old tipples, purchased by the previous owners.
One person in the comments section of the video even suggested that they could sell the wine.
“Those reds from 1984 sell for around £140 a bottle”, they said.
As well as the hidden rooms, the couple were also met with some unwelcome surprises when they began their renovation.
The boiler that they had been told was just two years old was actually installed in 2010, meaning the couple had to fork out for a new one.
When stripping the walls, they also realised that the previous owners had kept adding layers and layers of wallpaper on top of each other.
Some walls had six layers of different pattered wallpaper all pasted on top of them.
The biggest surprise of all came in a card given to the couple by the children of the house’s previous owners.
In the card they revealed that their mum and dad had purchased the house for just £3141 back in 1962.
What a bargain!
Nicole’s video has clearly left many open mouthed, as it has racked up over 400,000 views on the video sharing platform.
TikTok users raced to the video’s comments section to share their thoughts on the house.
One user said: “I’d be so happy with the hidden wine.”
Another user said: “Wow. It looks like it has so much potential”.
A third user said: “£3,000 for a house is crazy. And they wonder why young people are struggling to buy a house today.”
