A stoic Chelsea defence paired with an extremely wasteful Erling Haaland meant City struggled to find a way level despite a host of chances being created.
However, in the end City found their goal through pure power rather than their usual slick methods.
Minutes from the end Rodri smashed a shot towards goal, with Axel Disasi unable to deflect the ball away as it came off his knee.
City also had a last-gasp penalty appeal waved away after Levi Colwill pulled Ruben Dias down in the area.
