Stop doing a viral cleaning hack that’s damaging your home with mold – my DIY tricks fight condensation more effectively
CONDENSATION in your home can cause mold to form and a viral hack is only making the problem worse.
A professional cleaner has shared the simple DIY tricks she recommends instead.
In her post, Sarah Baker-Holtom (@house.of.holtom) explained that she has seen people trying the trend to no avail.
“Condensation is a natural build-up of moisture in the air, most rooms in the home get it but bedrooms in the morning, kitchens, and bathrooms are usually affected more,” the Instagram user said.
She pointed out that the issue “can cause black mold and build up if left [alone].”
Internet users have been using dish soap to tackle condensation around their windows.
Sarah broke down the reasons why this hack is causing more harm than good in your home.
“It will repel the water and on the face of it it will look like your windows are condensation-free but that’s not the truth,” she told her followers.
“The condensation will have to go somewhere and if it’s not on the glass it will gather on walls, ceilings, and sills causing faster mold build-up and damp patches.”
Sarah offered some methods for removing condensation rather than dispersing it elsewhere.
For her first tip, she recommended drawing the water away from your windows.
“A small pot of rock salt, baking soda, or cat litter, only if safe from pets and children, on a sill will draw water effectively,” she told her audience.
Sarah also advised her viewers to open their curtains and blinds first thing in the morning.
“Condensation is more likely with trapped air,” she explained.
“Wipe with tissue or a dry cloth in the morning to remove moisture.”
Tips for tackling condensation
- Place a pot of rock salt, baking soda, or cat litter on your window sill
- Open your curtains first thing in the morning
- Wipe away any moisture build-up every morning
- Place plants away from your windows
- Invest in a water vacuum and dehumidifier
Sarah suggested opening your windows regularly and being careful about where you place your houseplants.
“Remove plants from around windows as they can cause moisture traps,” she said.
Finally, she recommended investing in a water vacuum and a dehumidifier to tackle a build-up of condensation.
Her followers shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.
“Yes, I’ve seen this viral hack and heard it’s very damaging. I have mini dehumidifiers,” wrote one viewer.
“Thanks, for the amazing tips, lovely,” said another Instagram user.
