I ended a 5-year relationship over a doughnut – people say I’m going to be so much better off without him
A HANGRY woman broke things off with her boyfriend after a fight jam-packed with disappointment.
She explained that although she tried to be understanding, her boyfriend’s “selfish” actions were the icing on the… doughnut.
Redditor idk-i-just-werk-here shared her dating woes in a post.
After five years with her boyfriend, she revealed job layoffs impacted how she perceived him.
The couple both held roles within tech and were laid off two years ago.
While she managed to get back on her feet, she explained that her boyfriend struggled.
“Somehow I was able to bag another job within a few weeks. He never did. He never even applied,” she wrote.
Her boyfriend shared his hopes of transitioning into a different career and she agreed to financially support him while he pursued it.
“I assumed changing paths meant he would take a couple of months to apply to roles adjacent to but not the same as his last one, or maybe upskill with classes that would make him more competitive, but that never happened,” she explained.
“For two years, he’s either done absolutely nothing but play video games all day while I foot the bill, or dabbles in even less stable self-employed career paths.
“Youtuber, TikTok influencer, Twitch streamer, digital marketer. I stress dabbled because he never once took them seriously.”
Despite her boyfriend’s lack of ambition, she explained that she “sacrificed” things for herself to pay for his ventures.
“A new microphone here, a new graphics card there. Lighting. A camera. Meanwhile, it’s coming out of vacation funds I could save, investments, furniture we need, or add to a down payment for a house,” she said.
“I’ve given up luxuries I love and COULD afford like getting my nails and hair done to make sure our rent and bills are paid.”
Despite all the newfound time her boyfriend spends at home, she added that he also refused to contribute to housekeeping, cleaning, or cooking.
“I do everything. He never plans dates. I plan my own birthdays. If he orders food, he’ll consistently forget about me and order for himself,” she said.
I broke down into tears. It finally hit me. That one action made me realize how little care and respect he has for me, how selfish he actually is, and how big of an idiot I am.

“He’ll break my stuff (accidentally, like dropping a dish, or getting my headphones wet) and then not understand why I’m upset when he says ‘Well, we can just replace it.'”
The financial imbalance has led to “countless” fight cycles between the two.
“I tell him he needs to get a job because I can’t do this anymore, he will beg for forgiveness, ‘really try’ for two weeks, and then do nothing again,” she said.
The final straw, she revealed, came in the form of an Uber Eats breakfast.
She had allowed her boyfriend to pick out his food on her phone and then selected a plain doughnut and a coffee for herself as a “treat.”
“He ordered a full breakfast, a muffin, and a side of extra hash browns,” she said.
“When it arrived, I was on a quick work call. When I got off the call, he had already finished. I asked him where my doughnut was and he said he had eaten it.
“He had eaten his whole twoeggsbacontoastpancake meal, a muffin, hashbrowns, AND my doughnut.
“He said he never saw me order doughnuts before so he assumed it must have been for him. He didn’t wait to ask. He didn’t even stop to question where my food might have been.”
She explained the incident made her realize how “selfish” he was.
“I broke down into tears. It finally hit me. That one action made me realize how little care and respect he has for me, how selfish he actually is, and how big of an idiot I am,” she said.
Viewers consoled her and offered sweet words of encouragement and advice.
“I once ended a relationship over a grilled cheese, so I completely understand,” wrote one commenter.
“You are going to be so much better off without him.”
“The doughnut wasn’t just a doughnut, it was a representation of your relationship. You gave him everything you could, and he took that everything and more, even that little thing you saved for yourself to make you feel good,” agreed another.
“That’s why it hit you in that moment. You can only gain from leaving this mooch.”
