I’m a makeup artist – my tips will shave decades off every part of your face, your gran probably used the lipstick trick
YOU might be adding decades onto your face with dodgy application, a makeup artist has revealed.
But have no fear: makeup artist Wayne Goss has shared how you can age every part of your face backwards with the right techniques.
The expert, who has over 15 years of experience in the industry, spoke exclusively to Fabulous about shaving years off your features.
“Majority of us will be using makeup to help improve how we look, or even help cover up some of the wrinkles we’ve gained over the years,” he said.
“However, due to some mistakes, the makeup that we’re wearing could actually be doing the opposite effect.
“And it could potentially be adding not just one or two, but up to ten years to our face.”
FIRST THINGS FIRST
It’s worth noting that skincare should be your first priority when it comes to anti-ageing efforts.
Wayne recommends always reaching for hydrating ingredients, such as skincare and makeup products infused with hyaluronic acid.
And you should always apply a heavy moisturiser before you apply any makeup to your face, he adds.
As far as your eyes are concerned, you can watch the tutorial at the top of this page for the best way to skincare your eyes backwards – and stop makeup from settling in fine lines around them.
Wayne loves the Drunk Elephant Ceramighty Eye Balm for under-eyes – but if this is out of your budget at £53, he said using your standard moisturiser as eye cream will enhance your makeup application too.

EYES
The delicate skin around the eyes is prone to wrinkles and fine lines as collagen and elastin production decreases with age.
These lines typically manifest as crow’s feet and in our under-eye bags.
According to Wayne, the area in which you apply concealer makes all the difference in helping your makeup age you backwards.
“Concealer should be applied to the inner corner of the eyes only,” he said.
“This area does not crease… Ever!”
MOUTH
The best way to age your mouth backwards with makeup is to make your lips look bigger, according to Wayne.
And his hack for the perfect pout is doing something just “like your grandma did”.
“Apply lipstick to the bottom lip, press together (like your grandma did!) to transfer to the upper lip,” he instructured.
“Then use lip liner to trace your new lip shape.
“You’ll instantly have bigger lips!”
CHEEKS
The fat pads beneath our cheeks can diminish as we age, leading to a loss of volume and sagging in the mid-face region.
What’s more, loss of collagen can cause the skin in the cheeks to sag and droop, contributing to the formation of jowls and a less defined jawline.
Wayne recommends applying blusher high up on the cheek bones “to give the face a natural face lift”.
“The best blusher tip I can give is never, ever apply blusher when smiling,” he added.
“Smiling brings the cheeks up, but when you stop smiling the cheeks lower and blusher is too low. This makes us look older!”
What is Collagen?
- Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and provides strength and structure to the skin and muscles
- It plays a significant role in maintaining skin elasticity and hydration
- As we age, collagen production decreases, leading to wrinkles, sagging skin and decreased skin firmness
- Collagen production starts to dwindle in our mid-to-late 20s and early 30s. By 40, it has dropped dramatically
It’s important to note that while collagen-based skincare products may offer benefits, their effectiveness can hugely vary.
Some experts suggest that topical application of collagen may have limited effectiveness compared to other skincare ingredients that stimulate collagen production within the skin.
FOREHEAD
The most noticeable signs of ageing in the forehead are horizontal wrinkles that stretch across the forehead and vertical lines, often called frown lines or 11 lines, between the eyebrows.
These lines are a result of repetitive facial expressions, sun damage and decreased skin elasticity, which naturally happens as we age.
“The trick with forehead lines is to apply less,” Wayne said.
“It’s texture that causes makeup products to settle into fine lines.
“The less we use, the younger we look!”
JAWLINE
Decreased collagen and elastin production also affect our jawline, despite it not being an area of concern when it comes to anti-ageing discourse.
With age, the skin along the jawline becomes thinner and less able to bounce back after stretching.
This can contribute to sagging and drooping along the jawline, leading to the formation of jowls.
“Very (and I mean very) light shading of the jawline – nothing harsh,” Wayne said.
“Use a bronzer a shade or two deeper than your complexion and bring it down onto the neck slightly.”
