I thrifted a $145 jacket – I realized its true value when I saw the name written inside, it belonged to a music icon
YOU never know what treasures you will uncover in a thrift store, but one man has revealed his wildest find yet.
He only realized the true value of this classic fashion item when he saw the name written on the lining.
Since posting about his lucky purchase on Reddit, fans have been beating a path to the same West Village thrift store in New York.
He paid $145 for the long-length black pinstriped, single-breasted blazer.
But the silk lining suggested someone who loves the limelight. It was a vivid cerise, that could stop traffic.
When he found the name on an inside label, suddenly it all made sense.
The name of the rock megastar Sir Elton John was written in ink and tucked inside a pocket.
In another pocket, he made more discoveries. “I actually found a piece of paper in the pocket with a bunch of measurements and specifications with his name too,” he said.
The thrift fan posted pics of the gorgeous item on Reddit. The maker, Richard James Savile Row, was clear for all to see
Savile Row is a street in Mayfair, London, the home of bespoke and traditional tailoring for men.
Bespoke suits from Richard James can cost as much as $6,300. He has many celebrity clients including the Rocket Man.
He even designed Sir Elton’s wedding suit for the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
His working relationship with the rock star is not restricted to elegant suits. He has designed many of his famously outrageous stage outfits too.
These included his flamboyant costumes for Sir Elton’s residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Another outfit for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee concert included a pink tailcoat covered in Swarovski crystals.
Redditors were as excited by this find as the finder was.
“What a mysterious and wonderful thrift find though,” said one person in a sentiment echoed by many more.
Others had ideas on how to seek out its authenticity.
“I would think that a Savile Row tailor would have a detailed inventory of every jacket they’ve made, especially for a customer like Sir Elton John,” said a second person.
“This is so freaking cool. Seriously the best find ever,” said a third person.
Another Redditor said all the signs were adding up to be the real McCoy.
“Considering where it was found and considering the style, I think you’ve got the real deal,” they said.
“Just looking at that coat screams Sir Elton John. It’s an awesome coat regardless,” added another Redditor.
