I’m a gardening pro & my top tips for keeping grass green and healthy are easy – including the bargain buy from Wickes
A GARDENING professional has revealed her easy top tips for keeping your grass green and healthy.
After a long wet winter, Brits will be looking forward to spending some well deserved time in their gardens.
So now is the perfect time to get the outdoor space prepped and ready for the warmer days outside.
And the first place to start will be to mow the overgrown grass in your garden, according to experts.
But managing to get the perfect lawn, without having leftover patches can be tricky.
However, Clair Albone, who is Wickes senior category manager of garden maintenance, has revealed an east tips guide.
Clair says: “The first cut of the year is the most important.
“Taking the time to prepare lawns now, will pay dividends throughout summer and the rest of the year.”
To achieve a perfect lawn keen, Clair’s reveals her must-have guide of dos and don’ts:
TIMING IS KEY
The first cut of the year should be in March, but the exact date is dependent on local conditions and the weather.
It’s important that you don’t start too early in the year as this could damage the ground.
March is often ideal as the days start to become longer and warmer, meaning lawns can receive all the nutrients they need, even at a shorter length.
Gardeners can start by mowing one to two times a month at this point but, as May and June approach, this can be as often as once a week, as warm temperatures paired with moist soil will lead to fast growth.

THE PERFECT LENGTH
Grass should be left at around 1.5 inches to avoid bare patches.
The most important thing is to not go too low, as going too short can increase the chances of grass going yellow.
It’s best practice to put the lawnmower on the highest setting for the first cut, so only the top of the grass is taken off.
However, this is not to say grass can’t be shorter later in the season.
MAINTAINING THICKNESS
Another key element of maintaining a picturesque lawn is its thickness.
For those looking to avoid chemicals, the Westland SafeLawn box is a great option for a healthier and stronger lawn, whilst the Miracle-Gro Patch Magic Seed & Feed is a go-to solution for gardeners looking to fix patches in their lawn.
BANISH THE MOSS
Weeds and moss are a common issue and can be a constant battle for many gardeners. Avoid mowing too low as this can scalp the lawn and create opportunities for moss and weeds to establish.
To tackle moss and weeds that have already taken hold, the Westland Aftercut All In One Lawn Fertiliser works to simultaneously provide nutrients whilst combatting moss growth.
ON THE EDGE
For a picture-perfect lawn, finish the first cut with some precise edges.
The best way to ensure this is by investing in tools that will save time and give a clean finish, such as the Bosch Universal Grass Cut 18V-260 Cordless Grass Trimmer featuring a versatile head, for hands free head tilting and edging adjustments.
