WHAT was once considered chic can quickly become a home faux pas and nowhere is this more evident than in the trends that can make your home look cheap.
If you want your home to look posh and expensive, interior design expert Zara O’Hare from Land of Rugs has identified 6 trends you should avoid at all costs.
Signage
You might want to embrace the motto “live, laugh, and let go” for this next trend.
“Good design should spark your imagination and get you thinking.
“Signage, however, leaves nothing to the imagination. It dictates rather than inspires, often cluttering a space more than it complements, and should be a thing of the past” the expert added.
Plastic Chairs
If you stroll into any furniture store, you’ll be welcomed by lots of different options.
And undoubtedly, when it comes to chairs, there’s bound to be a plastic variety showcased.
However, according to the expert, they are typically more associated with outdoor or informal spaces rather than formal or upscale interiors.
“Plastic chairs can often clash with the decor and style of a room.
Whether it’s a modern, traditional, or eclectic design scheme, plastic chairs may appear out of place, disrupting the overall aesthetic harmony,” suggests the expert.
Plastic Trees with Large Leaves
You might consider leaf-ing this item out of your home.
“The secret to achieving a more realistic look with plastic trees lies in choosing varieties with smaller foliage.
“While nothing beats the beauty of real foliage, it’s worth acknowledging that some spaces may not allow for real.
However, this doesn’t justify the inclusion of large plastic trees in our homes, potentially compromising our overall design aesthetic,” the expert added.
Limewash Walls
In recent years, limewash walls have been the boomerang trend of interior design, as they’ve beein in, out and then in again.
However, this trend can make your home look cheap if not executed with care.
“Whilst limewash walls can look stunning in the right setting, they can also appear garish if it’s done haphazardly or in spaces with minimal lighting.
For example, in a modern and minimalist home, applying limewash to all your walls might clash with the overall aesthetic. Consider using this technique as an accent wall or in rooms with a more traditional or rustic feel”, suggests the expert.
Foam Furniture
We’re all aware of the hefty price tags attached to furniture, and the search for something that is both cost-effective and comfortable can be challenging.
However, there’s one piece of furniture that should be banned from every home: the foam variety.
“Low-quality pieces often lack durability and style, and they tend to lose their shape much faster than well-crafted alternatives.
By filling your space with foam furniture, you’re essentially applying a dense coat of harmful industrial foam onto furniture that otherwise was just fine.
Foam furniture should firmly remain a thing of the past” recommends the expert.
Matching Color Schemes
One common myth in interior design is that everything in your home should have a matching colour palette in order to achieve cohesion.
This isn’t true and can often make your home look bland and uninspired. The expert recommends breaking free from the monotony of matching colour schemes.
“Instead of choosing all your furniture, curtains, and accessories in the same colour family, experiment with complementary tones, textures and/or patterns” recommends the expert.
