The 26-year-old explained that her older brother and his wife are expecting a baby in one month.
She said her entire family is against the name the expectant parents came up with.
She noted that her own family has relatively common names compared to the one chosen for her nephew.
WHAT’S THE NAME
The original poster asked for assistance in navigating the odd naming situation using the popular forum.
“A few days ago, [my brother and his wife] gathered my family around to tell them the name they selected — Earlgay.”
She maintained that she had no idea where the name actually came from.
“I don’t think it’s a reference to anything. It sounds like Earl Grey tea, but I asked my brother and he said they don’t drink tea,” she said.
“Our younger sister asked his wife — our sister-in-law — if the name Earl was a family name on her side, and the answer is no.
“We were all left confused and speechless.
“My very conflict-avoidant dad even told them, ‘You are making a gigantic mistake if you go through with this.'”
She expressed her concern that the name would lead to bullies taunting her nephew.
“It just doesn’t make any f**king sense,” she said.
“If you like the name Earl, it’s a bit old-fashioned at this point but whatever. Why add ‘-gay’ to it?
“Even beyond the low-hanging fruit that offers playground bullies, it literally doesn’t seem to have a point.
“It isn’t a tribute to anyone, it isn’t a maiden name in our families, we are just stone-cold puzzled.”
REDDIT REACTION
Several Redditors chimed in to give their thoughts on the unusual name.
“Sounds like pig Latin, instead of ‘girl,’ it’s ‘Earlgay,’ one wrote. “I hope they don’t do this.”
“Wait a second, is OPs brother doing this prank as the gender reveal??” someone else asked.
“This makes sense!! I’d love to know if the “boy” turns out to be a girl!” another added.
“Are you sure they aren’t trolling you? Because it would be a pretty good troll,” a third asked.
“Pig Latin for ‘girl,'” one more agreed.
