'The Batman' does a lot right. The overall vibe of the movie is great. It is oozing a dark, heavy rain, Film Noir atmosphere. I love the comics focusing on the Detective side of Batman and this was right up my alley.

I thought the story was engaging and interesting. The villain was mysterious and made me want to learn more about him.

This was a good foundation for a good movie, but unfortunately there were also some major shortcomings.

Firstly, the length of the movie. It was just too long and unneccessarily stretched out. Hollywood producers please realize that not every movie deserves to be a 3 hour monster. Less is more sometimes.

Also I did not like the ending. It was fine in itself, but I am getting tired of these super hero movies all having to end with a catastrophe of biblical proportions. And it did not fit the rest of the movie. Whereas the movie presented a crime story before, now it becomes the typical destruction of a city. Stick with the crime story, that would have made it more unique, more interesting, and made more sense.

The movie should have been allowed to be more violent and less family friendly. With the dark and grimy look that it had, the fights seemed too harmless. When Batman is beating someone's face to the pavement, I want to see the impact and be repulsed. And when someone gets shot several times by an assault rifle, don't have them get up 5 seconds later.

The characters could not impress me entirely. I liked the Batman and Catwoman depiction. But Bruce Wayne's as a permanent emo was getting old pretty fast. The penguin's character was wasted potential and should have been more prominent. Although the villain was great, it did not fit my image of the Riddler. This Riddler is basically the Joker, with a fable for riddles. Another psychopath, but the Joker being better at that. Also the relationships between the characters were not convincing. I didn't feel anything between Catwoman and Batman; or Alfred and Bruce.

Overall, I think the movie had really great potential, but lacks too much to be remembered as one of the best Batman movies. I hope they can improve in the sequel, which seems to be almost certain. Then we might get something really great. I am just afraid that the points I criticized were all driven by money making and will be disregarded.
