Sarah Paulson Tears Up Remembering Her ‘Dear Friend’ Diane Keaton
Sarah Paulson is still processing the loss of her friend Diane Keaton, who died last week at 79 from pneumonia. “I was incredibly close to her and this is a profoundly sad time for me,” Paulson told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet for the L.A. premiere of Ryan Murphy’s legal drama All’s Fair. “I can’t talk about it in any way that’s articulate other than to say that for all you knew and loved about her as a performer, she was even more as a friend.” When asked about Keaton’s legacy by Access Hollywood, Paulson similarly said that she’s “not able” to speak about the topic yet, but wants the world to know that her “dear friend” was “even more spectacular as a human being” than as a performer. A teary-eyed Paulson then added, “I was the luckiest person in the world to have had her in my life the way that I did.”
Keaton played Paulson’s mother in the 1999 rom-com The Other Sister, which was Paulson’s first major-studio movie. “She was the most generous, just playful, fun, alive performer, and really taught me the power of beats in a scene,” Paulson recalled to InStyle in September. “I was so scared, and she really took me under her wing, and we’ve been really good friends ever since.” Following COVID-19 lockdowns, Paulson’s first dinner outside of her house in 17 months was with Keaton — and her second major outing was Keaton’s daughter’s wedding, she said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2021. Reflecting on the friendship, she also told Kimmel that Keaton frequently called her the “dumbest person” she knows, noting, “I think it’s a term of affection coming from her.” That same year, Paulson was one of the famous friends who interviewed Keaton for Interview magazine. After asking Keaton what makes her heart sing, Paulson quipped, “You can say me,” to which Keaton replied, “Of course, Sarah, you make my heart sing.”
