Ronald McDonald house celebrates completion of Access for All project

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western New York is celebrating the completion of their $1.2 million renovation project -- which helps create access for all.

"A house is just a shelter, a shelter from the rain and other elements, it's what's inside that makes it a home," said Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House of Western New York Lisa Booz.

The Access for All project began at their West Ferry Street location in late 2023.

"This is a 130-year-old home," said Booz. "This is common in these homes that they're not accessible, so what a big change this means to our mission that we can finally accept children and adults who have mobility issues."

"Accessibility isn't a luxury, it's a right," said Buffalo Common Council Majority Leader Leah Halton-Pope. "Today, we celebrate the fact that more families regardless of physical ability or circumstance will be able to find comfort and support within these walls during some of life's most difficult moments."

Renovations include a ramp to the entrance of the home, an accessible bathroom on the first floor, and an accessible guestroom and bathroom on the second floor. They've also installed an elevator so that every visitor can have access to all floors, including their playroom in the basement.

The doors of the Ronald McDonald House have been open since 1983, helping thousands of families who are in town for pediatric medical care every year.

"Since 1983, there's at least been one family in this home," said Booz. "Most times our house is at capacity. We are a huge need in this community and it's not just helping those in Buffalo, we're helping those around the state and around the country."
