The United States continues its Gold Cup title defense on Saturday with a match against Trinidad & Tobago. The last time these two teams met the Soca Warriors dealt the Americans the most humiliating defeat in their history, preventing the U.S. from qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. The Stars & Stripes may never truly get revenge for that debacle, but this group match offers a chance to at least exercise a few of those past demons.

Gregg Berhalter’s first competitive match as USMNT manager wasn’t anything to get overly excited about. A 4-0 win over Guyana, a country participating in their first-ever major international competition, is to be expected and could even be considered disappointing. The U.S. will need to improve if they have any hope of getting to the final, much less beating Mexico. Recent arrival Tyler Boyd starred in the first match, scoring his first two goals since filing a one-time switch from New Zealand. Boyd is one of the reasons to be excited about the new era of the USMNT.
On the other side, things aren’t looking too bright for T&T. Their rebuilding process has been slow and a 2-0 loss against Panama in their opening group match has them in dire straits. Failure to get a result against the U.S. would see them eliminated from the competition after just two matches. Will we see an improved USMNT or will T&T again be hinder some to their goals?
