Mitch Trubisky and Matt Nagy did good work together during their first year in 2018. Trubisky threw for over 3,200 yards with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also topped 400 yards rushing with three more scores. Nagy routinely aided him with creative scheming and timely play calls that gave the young passer chances to make big plays. It wasn’t always perfect, but it resulted in one of the best passing seasons in recent Chicago Bears history.
There’s also the fact they went 11-3 together and won the NFC North title. Winning is always a great sign of a potentially fruitful quarterback and head coach combination. If they were able to accomplish all of that in their first season together? There’s no telling how much higher they’ll reach in the years to come. It is evident that the two are on the same page and working tirelessly to improve.
Are they the best QB-coach combo in the division though? Two former Pro Bowlers in Reggie Wayne and Brandon Flowers were posed that exact question on NFL Network. Wayne believes that honor belongs to Kirk Cousins and Mike Zimmer due to the success the former enjoyed statistically last season. Flowers? He sees the big picture with Trubisky and Nagy.
Mitch Trubisky and Matt Nagy certainly have time on their side
One thing that makes this relationship so strong is the fact it has a chance to last a really long time. Cousins turns 31 this season. Matthew Stafford did so in February. Aaron Rodgers will be 36 in December. Trubisky turns 25 in August. He is by far the young quarterback in the division. Nagy is 41-years old. If things continue to go well, those two could stay together for the next decade or longer.
That would make it the most sustained combination this franchise has seen since George Halas and Sid Luckman. Everybody knows how that one went. It included four NFL championships and Hall of Fame busts for both. Nobody is predicting the same for Trubisky and Nagy but there is no reason to think they won’t make each other better as the relationship deepens. To say nothing of how much it will help the Bears win football games.
