Talk to just about anybody who has met or played with Nick Foles. They all say the same thing. Mild-mannered. Great teammate. Pure class and totally unselfish. There’s a reason so many people like him. However, this can often make it easy to overlook how much of a competitor he actually is. If anybody understands that, it is Louis Riddick.
The ESPN analyst is a former player himself before transitioning to the scouting world. He eventually worked his way up the ladder to become a personnel director for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010. He was in the draft room when the team selected Foles out of Arizona in the 3rd round back in 2012. He’s had a front row seat for the quarterback’s entire career and knows exactly who he is as a person and a player.
That would explain why Riddick made no bones about it. On ESPN’s First Take, he stated that people better get the idea of Foles settling into the backup job out of their heads right now. That guy may have nothing personal against Mitch Trubisky, but he is absolutely gunning for that starting job.
Nick Foles all but certain to have the greenlight
This is a fact. The Bears aren’t going to hand Trubisky anything. The days of coddling and being patient are over. His job is no longer his by birthright (or draft status in this case). If he wants to keep it, he’ll have to earn it. Matt Nagy is almost guaranteed to give Foles the nod that the job is wide open. It’s his to take if he wants it. If Trubisky continues to look like the inconsistent player he was in training camp last year, then he’s all but doomed to go down as one of the biggest busts in franchise history.
Foles has been there and done that in the NFL. He has a ring and had to beat Tom Brady to do it. Why should he have any fear of competition against Trubisky at this point? Newsflash. He won’t. All the pressure is on the 25-year old. People like to say he always seems to deliver his best when the stakes are highest. Well, they won’t get much higher for him that what awaits in July and August.
