Bears Still Urged To Trade For Derek Carr. Wait, What?
The Chicago Bears have set their course at quarterback. They had their array of choices? Rumors are they talked with Teddy Bridgewater. That fell through. Cam Newton? Andy Dalton? Neither were seriously considered. In the end, the team decided to go with Nick Foles as the man who would compete with Mitch Trubisky. All the fantasy scenarios were at an end from Tom Brady to Derek Carr.
Or so everybody thought.
It seems the Carr idea hasn’t quite died yet. Despite the Bears being fully committed to their quarterback competition, some think it’s not too late for them to make one last push to convince the Raiders to part ways with their disgruntled starter. Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report believes despite the monumental odds and logistics working against it that this is something they must do.
“Of all the proposed trades, the Chicago Bears making a run at Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr may be the most improbable, but Bears general manager Ryan Pace has to try or risk wasting another season because the team isn’t settled at the game’s most important position.
The Bears really aren’t in a position to get rid of either Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles from a financial perspective. The team doesn’t have quite enough salary-cap space at the moment to afford Carr, either. But this is the perfect scenario that applies when someone says it’s time to “shoot their shot.”
The Raiders have never fully committed to Carr, no matter what is said publicly. They’ve flirted with other quarterback options and have openly praised current backup Marcus Mariota.”
Derek Carr is beyond unrealistic for the Bears now
Back in April or March, this idea would’ve made a ton of sense. Carr and head coach John Gruden appeared to have a somewhat cool relationship. Gruden was frustrated with how the QB played last year. The QB himself is tired of being disrespected. Signing Mariota and then the coach singing his praises in training camp was probably a reason this trade was even brought up again.
In reality, Carr isn’t going anywhere. The Raiders have made it clear they’re giving him this season as one final chance to run the offense how Gruden wants it. Besides, the Bears aren’t in a position to make a trade even they wanted to. They can’t afford his sizable contract and don’t really have the draft capital it would take either.
Best to just let that dream slowly fade away.
