And Sun Racing guru Templegate has made his picks for day one of the festival.
3.40 SCHOLASTIC ran well in a Cheltenham Grade 2 earlier this month when a close-up second. She relished this trip on decent ground there and a 2lb rise in the weights gives her every chance.
4.15 ECHOES IN RAIN won a Fairyhouse Grade 2 by an impressive 15 lengths and looks well up to this top level. She hit the front heading to the last and cleared right away.
4.50 JAZZAWAY has been off since running a cracker in second at the Galway Festival. She went down in a head-bobber there and is effectively 3lb higher thanks to her rider’s claim.
5.25 CHACUN POUR SOI can get the better of Allaho over this trip. He was a little below par when third in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham but was still only just over a length away.
5.55 Given the yard’s record in the race with the past two winners, the Denise Foster runners can have a big say with NONBINDING looking the pick.
6.30 MONKFISH was superb in landing his fourth Grade 1 win at the Cheltenham Festival last month. He didn’t have to leave first gear in going from the front and running them into the ground. There’s more to come and he’s on the road to next season’s Gold Cup.
7.00 Enda Bolger has won this five times in eight years and YOUCANNOTBESERIOUS can improve on his second from this race in 2019. He’s not been out since but he’ll be fit to go and has Derek O’Connor on board.
7.35 MYTHICAL HERO showed promise when a close-up third on debut here last month. He travelled well and just tired late on.
And if you’re looking for Wednesday at the Festival, we also have you covered.
3.40 MT LEINSTER GOLD has been impressive in winning both starts and has lots of staying power.
Top claimer Jordan Gainford can steer her to another victory.
4.15 FEELGOOD ISLAND went close in a Wexford handicap last time after running well over this trip at Navan. This is a hot contest but he can hit the frame again.
4.50 PANDA BOY was unlucky to finish only seventh in a big field at Fairyhouse last time. He was stopped a couple of times and was a good winner here on debut so this track and dropping in trip will suit.
5.20 GALOPIN DES CHAMPS was an easy winner of the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham and can handle this hike in grade.
He clocked a fast time and has more to come.
5.55 CLAN DES OBEAUX ran arguably his best ever race when winning the Betway Bowl at Aintree in first-time cheekpieces last time.
That prompted Paul Nicholls to shell out the supplementary fee to run him here.
6.30 SIR GERHARD got the better of Kilcruit in a right ding-dong for the Cheltenham Champion Bumper and there won’t be much between them again.
The gap was closing up the hill but the tip just had a bit more toe when needed and was always holding on.
7.00 MINELLA TIL DAWN was a game winner at Naas before a late mistake proved costly at Gowran when fourth last time. He stays well, has a top 7lb claimer on board and won’t mind if there’s a little cut in the ground.
7.35 GRANGEE drops in class after her excellent sixth in the Cheltenham Champion Bumper. She won a Leopardstown Grade 2 before that which sets the standard.
