Who’s on the U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team?

After the weekend’s U.S. Olympic trials in St. Louis, Missouri, the women’s Olympic gymnasts were named.

The top four finishers were selected for the team, though the selection committee had the option of picking a lower-scoring athlete — for instance, MyKayla Skinner, who just missed fourth place overall and stood to contribute a strong vault score in Tokyo.

In the end, Skinner — who had been a 2016 Olympic alternate — was not picked for the team but will be one of two U.S. women competing as individual Olympians, their scores not considered for the team competition. Riley McCusker, 19, who competed only on uneven bars at the trials, fell short in her bid for that last remaining individual spot.

Emily Lee, 18, of Los Gatos, who trains at West Valley Gymnastics, finished 15th. She will begin her NCAA career at UCLA this fall.

The team:

• Simone Biles, 24, 4-foot-8; World Champions Centre, Houston. Four gold medals and one bronze at 2016 Olympics. All-around champion at 2019 world championships.
• Suni Lee, 18, 5-foot-0, from St. Paul, Minn.; Midwest Gymnastics Center, Minnesota.  Eighth all-around at 2019 world championships. Committed to Auburn University.
• Jordan Chiles, 20, from Vancouver, Wash; World Champions Centre, Houston.  Third at 2021 national championships and team trials. Committed to UCLA.
• Grace McCallum, 18, 5-foot-0, from Isanti, Minn.; Twin City Twisters. Committed to University of Utah.

Individual Olympians:

• Jade Carey, 20, 5-foot-1, from Phoenix; Arizona Sunrays.  Qualified based on her World Cup performance. Committed to Oregon State.
• MyKayla Skinner, 24, 5-foot-0, from Gilbert, Ariz.; Desert Lights. Competes for University of Utah; NCAA all-around runner-up in her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Alternates:

• Kayla DiCello, 17, from Boyds, Md.; Hill’s Gymnastics, Maryland. 2019 junior national champion. Committed to University of Florida.
• Kara Eaker, 18, 5-foot-0, from Grain Valley, Mo.; Great American Gymnastics Express, Missouri. Committed to University of Utah.
• Leanne Wong, 17, 5-foot-1, from Overland Park, Kans.; Great American Gymnastics Express, Missouri. Committed to University of Florida.
• Emma Malabuyo, 18, from Milpitas, Calif.; Texas Dreams, Dallas. Committed to UCLA.

The women’s gymnastics competition at the Tokyo Olympics will run from July 25 to Aug. 3.
