The Warriors have introduced several throwback uniforms in recent years but the latest edition is perhaps the most backward-looking of the bunch.
Golden State was one of three teams to unveil a new Origins jersey Tuesday morning, along with the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics. Those are the three teams whose nicknames are unchanged from the inaugural 1946 season of the Basketball Association of America, a precursor to today’s NBA. The New York Knicks and Boston Celtics also unveiled Origins jerseys to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the league’s beginning.
For what it’s worth, the Warriors won the BAA championship in its first year.
Of course, the difference between the Warriors and those teams is their cross-country trip in 1962 from Philadelphia to the Bay Area to find a new home.
The jersey unveiled Tuesday is based on the 1961-62 road uniform of the Philadelphia Warriors, their last season before the move West. The team announced it will debut the jerseys in its home opener, a date that’s not yet been announced, though the NBA season is set to tip off Oct. 19.

The uniform features a blue base with a red “Warriors” on the front in block lettering with a white drop shadow. The piping on the sleeves and neckline is yellow and red. One clear change: The ’62 Warriors surely did not have a Rakuten advertising patch on the shoulder of their jersey.
Along with the new uniform, the Warriors have a 75th-anniversary logo that will be at the center of a special hardwood court that matches the Origins jersey. The logo is a nod to the team’s other former home, Oakland, featuring to the former Oracle Arena (now Oakland Arena), where the Warriors played 47 of their first 75 seasons. The Warriors have been careful to try to keep connected to the East Bay community, including an “Oakland” jersey unveiled last season that was largely criticized by fans as pandering.
The logo will also be incorporated in the team’s other court designs, which pair with their four other uniforms: standard white, standard blue, The Bay and this year’s City Edition, which will be unveiled later this fall.
