Tokyo 2020: Katarina Johnson-Thompson dominates in 100m hurdles but struggles in high jump in the women’s heptathlon
KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON began her Olympic heptathlon campaign with a great performance in the 100m hurdles.
The 28-year-old Team GB star won her heat in 13.27 seconds.
She has only ever run faster when winning the world title in Doha back in 2019.
Johnson-Thompson looked to be fully recovered from the ruptured Achilles she suffered back in December.
KJT then had around two hours before she was back out competing in the high jump.
It is an event we already know that Johnson-Thompson is world class in and she got off to the perfect start with a first attempt of 1.77m.
But she made her first error when it came to trying for 180m – which proved too much.
However, she nailed it with her second to move onto the next height of 1.83.
A little stutter three steps out led to her hitting the bar first time out and worries mounted as she failed with her second attempt.
She then had her final chance and she showed exactly why she was a champion by holding her nerve and clearing it to move onto 1.86.
The reigning world champion cleared the height with ease.
But unfortunately, she failed her first attempt at 1.89.
Her second attempt was no better as she crashed into the pole and cursed her luck.
Third time didn’t prove to be the charm for the Team GB star as she failed to clear the height.
Denise Lewis said of her failure: “[It’s a] disappointment for Kat, but obviously not a disaster.”
She added: “It would’ve been a tall order, a big ask, for Kat to get close to the 1.90 mark. This is damage limitation.”
