9 awesome photos of American wrestler Gable Steveson celebrating gold with his signature backflip
American heavyweight wrestler Gable Steveson pulled off an incredible buzzer-beating win for gold Friday at the Tokyo Olympics, and he celebrated in the best way he does with his signature backflip on the mat.
In the men’s freestyle 125kg gold-medal match, Steveson trailed Georgia’s Geno Petriashvili, 8-5, with about 20 seconds to go. But not only did Steveson — a wrestler for Minnesota and 2021 NCAA champion — close the gap and get within a point of Petriashvili with less than seven seconds left, he then pulled off a literal last-second takedown for a stunning victory.
At his first Olympics, gold is Steveson’s first Olympic medal.
