Justin Fields Trolled Teven Jenkins When OT Finally Returned
The Chicago Bears have already gotten some encouraging returns from their 2021 draft class. Justin Fields took a big step forward on Monday night in Pittsburgh, showcasing the ability that made him a 1st round pick at quarterback. Larry Borom, their 5th round pick, ably protected him at right tackle despite battling star pass rusher, T.J. Watt. Then there is 6th rounder Khalil Herbert who was terrific filling in for an injured David Montgomery over the past month.
All three look like legitimate NFL starters. Yet it’s possible one of the biggest talents in this class hasn’t even gotten a chance to play yet. The Bears were quite high on Teven Jenkins coming out of Oklahoma State. So much that they traded up in the 2nd round to acquire him. It was a blow for everybody involved when the young tackle had to undergo back surgery due to a lingering injury. Some wondered if he’d be able to return this season.
They got their answer this week.
The Bears opened his 21-day practice window to return from Injured Reserve. That means Jenkins is allowed to start practicing in pads again. If he shows the body is indeed healthy, they will activate him to rejoin the roster. Based on comments by head coach Matt Nagy, the rookie was pushing to return sooner. One person who is happy to have the big blocker back in the mix is Fields. Though he couldn’t resist teasing Jenkins when he finally started practicing.
This is another example of Fields the personality. Don’t be misled by his somewhat stoic and even-keel demeanor. The Bears quarterback can have a biting tongue where his teammates are involved. He clapped back on Jimmy Graham when the tight end was frustrated he didn’t get the ball in practice by saying he needs to be open. So acting as if Jenkins is a brand new face is right up his alley. Blistering, but all in good fun.
Justin Fields no doubt wonders about Jenkins’ status too
Given the results of the past couple of games, it is unlikely the Bears are going to make any changes along the offensive line. Borom and Jason Peters have held up well at offensive tackle. They could move him inside to guard but he isn’t going to unseat Cody Whitehair or James Daniels either. The only spot one could call vulnerable is center with Sam Mustipher but Jenkins has never played there.
No, it seems the Bears plan to play the waiting game. Offensive line coach Juan Castillo revealed the plan moving forward is simple. Jenkins will get work at both left and right tackle in practice. A great way to give the rookie experience on both sides in case he’s needed. Injuries happen all the time in the NFL. There is a good chance he’ll get the call at some point before the season is over. A big reason they and Justin Fields are glad to have him back.
Until then, they’ll have to get creative.
Adding him as an extra lineman in jumbo sets. Using him as a blocker on field goal tries. It isn’t much but it will be a way to get the rookie going. Fans are anxious to see him play. So are the Bears. GM Ryan Pace knows this draft class might be the one thing that can save him from losing his job.
