It looked like Jaquan Brisker might miss the start of training camp over a contract issue for a brief moment. Thankfully GM Ryan Poles got a deal done at the 11th hour. The 2nd round safety didn’t miss a single practice. It is becoming clear the Bears’ offense probably wishes he did end up holding out for a while. That is how much of a nuisance he’s become only three practices into camp. No doubt the coaching staff loves it.
It started on Thursday when the rookie flashed his incredible versatility. First, he knocked down a pass over the middle in coverage. Then he lined up at cornerback during one play before dropping into the box and bringing pressure on a blitz. It seemed like everything he did resulted in the offense having a setback. There was no respite on Friday as Justin Fields felt his wrath early in practice when Brisker cut in front of a pass to Cole Kmet for an interception.
Jaquan Brisker isn’t getting lucky. This is a trend.
A rookie having a good day once or twice a week is nothing new during training camp. It happens all the time. It is different when one strings multiple good days together. That is what they can a trend. Darnell Mooney did the same thing during his rookie camp back in 2020. It is often a clear sign that the player is good and will be an immediate impact starter out of the gate. It becomes easier every day to understand why Poles wanted him so badly during the draft.
Making those Mike Brown comparisons a few months ago may have felt premature. Maybe they still are. Yet it is impossible to ignore Jaquan Brisker anymore. He’s been a factor on defense from the moment he stepped on the field. If he is already this effective, there is no telling how much better he could be down the line. That might explain why Matt Eberflus and the defensive staff gush about him so much.
