Rams Fans Are Already Getting Sick Of Allen Robinson

0

The national media lambasted the Chicago Bears for letting Allen Robinson walk in free agency last March. He’s an elite receiver and the driving force of their passing game. Yet the two sides never came to terms on an extension. The Bears weren’t willing to meet his price, feeling that while he was a good player, he didn’t warrant elite compensation. So when the receiver signed a three-year deal for $46.5 million with the Los Angeles Rams, everybody was convinced the time was finally at hand. Chicago would see what a mistake they made.

Those people seem awfully quiet these days. The defending Super Bowl champions are now 2-2 after a crushing 24-9 loss to their arch-rival San Francisco 49ers. The most disturbing part was how feeble the passing game looked. Matthew Stafford finished with 200 yards and an interception despite 48 passing attempts. Front and center to that ineptitude was Robinson, who had two catches for seven yards. He now has nine catches for 95 yards and one touchdown in four games.

Let’s say Rams fans aren’t taking to this overly well.

Allen Robinson hasn’t looked the same for a long time.

It is hard to pinpoint where things started going wrong for the wide receiver. Nothing seemed amiss at the end of 2020. He had over 100 yards in his second-to-last game of that season. Then in 2021, something happened. The best way to describe it is his target share went down. When Mitch Trubisky was no longer there to feed him the football, it felt like his effectiveness went down the tubes. Then he suffered a hamstring injury against Pittsburgh, which made him irrelevant the rest of the year.

Everybody was sure Los Angeles would reveal the true Allen Robison. It appears that is the case, but not in the way they expect. The man doesn’t seem to thrive when he isn’t the central focus of the passing game. People talk about his 1,000-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020. They don’t talk about how he needed 305 targets to break those milestones. He needs volume to be truly impactful. That is why signing with the Rams was probably a mistake. He was never going to outpace Cooper Kupp in terms of targets.

It seems like when he’s not the center of attention in an offense, Robinson almost loses interest. His time in Chicago proved that. Now it’s happening again.
