Lage was ruthlessly sacked earlier this week after a disappointing 2-0 defeat at fellow strugglers West Ham on Saturday night.
It’s understood the Wolves hierarchy made the call within hours of the defeat before informing Lage yesterday.
The Sevilla boss is under serious threat of losing his job after a dire start to this season.
Their latest defeat at home to Atletico Madrid over the weekend has their powerbrokers reportedly in talks over his sacking.
And reports today suggest it’s expected that he’ll leave his current post following Wednesday night’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund.
This link and move away could prove timely for the 56-year-old Spaniard.
Fellow Portuguese boss Ruben Amorim was the man Wolves were seemingly after as a replacement for Lage initially and was the early favourite.
Amorim took Sporting on a 32-game unbeaten run during the 2020/21 campaign when guiding them to Primeira Liga glory.

That title win was their first for 19 YEARS and was the first title not won by Benfica or Porto during that time.
They have started superbly in the Champions League this campaign too with two wins from two and no goals conceded – including a 2-0 win over Tottenham.
There is a reported £20million compensation fee on his head and the well-regarded coach has drifted from 5/4 to 9/1.
Pedro Martins is next best at 8/1.
His appointment would keep the run of Portuguese managers going after Lage and Nuno Espirito Santo before him.
Martins was most recently in charge of Olympiacos before he was replaced in the summer by Carlos Corberan – who has been sacked since.
Andre Villas-Boas has been out of work since his sacking from Marseille in 2021 after a public outburst at the club’s recruitment policy and is 16/1.
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is 20/1 with Brendan Rodgers just ahead of him at 16/1.
