LIVE: Denmark Takes on Tunisia in World Cup Group Opener
Follow along as the Danes, with Christian Eriksen back in the fold, meet the Carthage Eagles to begin action in Group D.
Fresh off reaching the semifinals of Euro 2020, Denmark enters the 2022 World Cup with eyes on another deep run at a major tournament.
The Danes, boosted by the return of Christian Eriksen, take on Tunisia to open their quest in Qatar, and they enter on the heels of mixed results. Denmark beat 2018 World Cup champion France twice in recent UEFA Nations League matches, but lost twice to 2018 World Cup runner-up Croatia in games dating back to June. Its meeting with the Carthage Eagles is a rarity—they’ve only ever played each other once before, in a friendly 20 years ago.
The real story is Eriksen, though, with the star midfielder having collapsed and suffered cardiac arrest on the field at the Euros. He scored two minutes into his return to Denmark’s national team last March and had a stated goal of making it to Qatar. He’s reached his personal target; now his team takes aim at doing the same.
