Chicago Bears Suddenly Have Another Pass Rush Opportunity
If the Chicago Bears’ defense was going to take a step forward in 2023, they had to upgrade their defensive line. It was arguably the worst it’s ever been last season, not only being part of the second-worst run defense in the NFL but also accounting for only ten total sacks. So nobody was surprised when GM Ryan Poles devoted several resources to improving it. Yannick Ngakoue, DeMarcus Walker, and Andrew Billings arrived as free agents. Gervon Dexter and Zacch Pickens arrived via the draft. It’s a much deeper and more talented group than last year.
However, many still feel it’s not quite good enough from a pass rush standpoint. One more piece wouldn’t hurt. Many fans quietly hope Poles makes an aggressive run at All-Pro Chris Jones, who remains in a contract standoff with the Kansas City Chiefs. That seems implausible. That said, another Jones in the AFC West might suddenly be up for grabs. Reports have surfaced that veteran defensive end Chandler Jones‘ relationship with the new Las Vegas Raiders regime has hit a new low.
He seems to have beef with head coach Josh McDaniels and also doesn’t care for defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. Jones has since unfollowed the team and teammates on social media.
The Chicago Bears have every reason to inquire about Jones.
Though 33 years old, he’s still proven to be an effective pass rusher. He had 47 pressures last season, far better than any Bears edge rusher. The price to acquire him wouldn’t be high. His 4.5 sacks last year were the lowest he’s had when injuries weren’t involved since his rookie season. Poles could probably secure him for a mid-round pick without much trouble. Maybe even a pick swap. The problem is his contract. Jones counts over $14 million against the salary cap this season. It jumps to $20 million next season.
If a deal were to happen, the veteran would likely have to negotiate a contract adjustment. They’d have to lower that 2023 cap hit. Maybe Jones would take a lower overall number if more of it becomes guaranteed. Either way, adding him to the defensive front would give the Chicago Bears their best array of pass rushers since Robert Quinn and Khalil Mack were together. It would allow Walker to play more inside, where he’s proven more effective. It would also give youngsters like Dexter, Pickens, and Dominique Robinson another outstanding teacher to learn from.
